Vlog Ep. 146: Snack Talk

As is the nature of food-related topics, tonight's #BaduyPride pushed past 90 minutes again as we talked about all sorts of snacks including some full meals that other people seem to treat as snacks. It's a little ironic that we didn't bother to go into definitions at first given how we made such a big deal about setting the parameters for other episodes.

Despite the fact that my snacking options are a lot more limited versus Tobie's, we both had a lot of fun with tonight's topic. And I guess a big part of it was how such discussions inevitably turn nostalgic, and we all ended up talking about snack memories from our younger years. And we love it when the discussions get so frenetic - we all walk away with good vibes and such versus how we all felt before the show started.

Vlog Ep. 145: The One About Sleeping

It's the seemingly random #BaduyPride episode suggestions that end up being the surprisingly more engaging topics and we spent over 90 minutes talking about SLEEPING. You could argue that it's because it's such a universally relatable topic and that would make sense. Or maybe people just don't have anything to do on a weeknight? Either way, it was a lot of fun and that's what matters, right?

But yes, we had a whole episode to talk about our different sleeping habits, our quirks, what works and what doesn't, and everything in between. But this isn't the episode about dreams - that deserves its own night and we'll cover that in full at a later date.

For now, good night, everyone!

Vlog Ep. 144: Competitive Romance with Love Letter

Tonight's #BaduyPride had us revisiting one of the older games in our collection that remains among our favorites - Love Letter. We first mentioned this game in our episode about gateway games to introduce new people to the tabletop gaming hobby. This 2-4 player card game designed by Seiji Kanai has been reskinned into so many different versions by now, all based on the same amazing game engine.

The classic Love Letter is still a pretty solid experience and still has as much depth whether you're playing with first-time players or bluffing game veterans. And how it manages all this with so few characters and a fundamentally simple central game mechanic - it all comes together to create something far more than the sum of its part. I know I wax poetic over this game, but it's totally worth it.

Vlog Ep. 143: Spoilery WandaVision Talk

We had a lot of fun with our first spoiler-filled #BaduyPride episode despite how we typically avoid spoiling both old and new movies and TV shows. But we figured that crazy brilliance of WandaVision more than justified us talking about our theories and speculations freely without the burden of avoiding spoilers.

We hope everyone enjoyed the live stream as much as we did, and if people want to see more episodes like this, do let us know! We will, of course, clearly label if the episode is going to contain spoilers to help people continue to enjoy content at their own pace while still leaving others free to geek out with us and just throw out any ideas that may make sense.

And YES - expect us to have another WandaVision episode once the first season fully wraps up, if only to see how many of our theories prove to be true come the end of the show.

Vlog Ep. 142: It's Good to be Bad with Villainous

We've wanted to feature this particular game on #BaduyPride for some time now, but we decided to wait for the recent expansion to arrive before we decided to tackle Disney Villainous, a card game designed Prospero Hall and published by Ravensburger. The game supports 2-6 players, but we feel it runs a lot better with 3, at most 4 players.

There's a lot of love that obviously went into this game ranging from the quality of the art to the quality of the card stock. And there's the greater brilliance of how each villain has its own path to victory and different mechanics that makes each deck works. On top of that, they created unique Fate decks that provide obstacles for the player villains by literally playing through the movie. And it's not easy being able to adapt a narrative into a game and have card mechanics support this fully.

Vlog Ep. 141: The One About Singapore

We pulled another topic from the request queue for this episode of #BaduyPride and ended up talking all about Singapore! It's the first country that Tobie and I have traveled to together and the one we've also visited the most because of the fact that I have family there. So for obvious reasons, the country is very near and dear to our heart.

This was also our first travel-related episode, which isn't the easiest topic to discuss while the country has remained under different forms of quarantine for almost a year now. But as is the nature of Baduy Pride, we focused on the better memories and talked about all the things that we love about Singapore in this rather lengthy episode.

Vlog Ep. 140: Making Animal Friends at the New York Zoo

We took some time off from Baduy Pride to fully enjoy the long weekend, but we're finally back with another board game feature. Today's episode was about a new favorite - Uwe Rosenberg's New York Zoo! This abstract strategy game is surprisingly simple to learn but quite deep in terms of actual strategy with its combination of tile placement, grid coverage, and other game mechanics coming together to create a uniquely enjoyable game experience.

This game has it all! First, there's the joy of creating a park for both zoo animals and a few amusement park-style amenities. And then there's the satisfaction of finding unique piece combinations that fit together perfectly. And it goes without saying that anyone is going to celebrate the 127 cute animal figures in the set because of course, we need more wooden animal tokens in our geeky life.

Vlog Ep. 139: Work Productivity

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was all about work productivity! It was a bit of a weird topic to discuss after work hours, but I suppose it made enough sense in the middle of the workweek. It was quite interesting to end up nerding out over all the different tips and tricks we employ to get through all our work deadlines without going bonkers.

We tried to cover all the bases starting from notetaking and task tracking to the quirks of video conferences. And the folks in the comments had a lot of insights of their own to share about staying motivated at work and getting in the right mindset even while working from home. I really appreciate the sort of conversations we have with the friends who join the live stream episodes. As much as Tobie and I could just record content and upload on a schedule, I really prefer the interactive potential of the live streams - really gives us something to bounce off of and such.

Vlog Ep. 138: Sparing No Expense with Dinosaur Island

Tonight's #BaduyPride was about one of our favorite board games - the ever-brilliant Dinosaur Island, created by Jonathan Gilmour and Brian Lewis. This is a different spin on a worker placement game that finally addresses the need to have a board game all about running a park full of dinosaurs. Eating of guests is not necessarily optional.

When I look at our board game collection, you can really note certain themes of game purchases. And this game checks off a lot of different boxes. We have a lot of worker placement games to be sure. And we love games with lots of unique meeple-style components like Caverna and our more recent acquisition of New York Zoo. And this game totally celebrates its theme to the fullest, and that deserves a lot of love in itself.

Vlog Ep. 137: Alcohol Talk

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was a slightly ironic one since we talked about alcohol all night and didn't end up drinking for some reason. But life's funny that way I suppose. But it was still a very fun episode as we just followed the organic dynamics of the conversation and talking about everything from our first drinks to our hangover mitigation strategies.

And while we have occasionally drunk at home during video calls with friends or other live stream episodes, it's never been quite the same experience as our regular O Bar nights and I really do miss that. We miss the unique circumstances of being at the bar together, enjoying the different drag performances together, and all the fun and crazy conversations we'd end up having over the course of the night.

One day again. Hopefully one day soon.

Vlog Ep. 136: Twirling with Noodles

Tonight's suggested #BaduyPride episode topic resulted in another food-centric episode. This one was all about noodles, although we expanded the discussion to also include pasta and our modest efforts to define the differences between the two because apparently, that's a thing. Apologies again for people who leave these episodes feeling hungry late at night.

My going keto has really changed my perspective on noodles and other carb-rich food, and this episode really drove that point home. It also helped illuminate that Tobie's life has changed as well, even if he's just lower carb than before and not necessarily full keto like me. Noodles are still a lot of fun, sure, but I don't miss them all that much. Small blessings.

Vlog Ep. 135: Storming Takeshi's Castle

We had so much fun with tonight's #BaduyPride episode about Takeshi's Castle, or however you may know this amazing, one-of-a-kind Japanese game show. As painful as the experience obviously was for many of the contestants on the show, it's still an amazing television experience that we'll never quite see again whether due to safety reasons or on the scale of the production that we saw with this show.

While I don't think Tobie and I would ever want to be on a show like Takeshi's Castle, we can't help but celebrate the creative ideas for games and challenges they came up with and how everyone on the show was just so gung-ho. I mean, why else would they compete in a show with such insane physical challenges AND do this in a themed costume, right?

Vlog Ep. 134: Economic Fashion Dominance with Prêt-à-Porter

After a very geeky weekend, we're finally back with our first #BaduyPride episode for the month of February. And today's featured tabletop game is one of our favorites - the economic strategy game that just happens to be about fashion, Prêt-à-Porter. This game is published by Portal Games and was designed by Piotr Haraszczak and Ignacy Trzewiczek.

As challenging as it can be to learn at first, the effort is more than worth it in the long run. The game is deep and extremely tight and everything moves like clockwork once you figure out how all the pieces go together. Will you vie for every fashion show or will you sit one out and come back stronger the next time? The game presents you with very compelling decisions that result in wonderful, exciting combinations.

This is why we love this game so much.
