Vlog Ep. 288: Halloween Horror Reading

For this Friday night episode of #BaduyPride, we decided to dive into various books and comics people can consider exploring as Halloween-themed horror reading. And while there's a lot of content that includes horror elements, not every such written work fully embraces the core principles of horror stories.

I still expected Tobie to provide the lion's share of recommendations given he's really the big horror buff between us. But I was rather surprised at how many things I had also read and was able to talk about, so I guess reading is still my great equalizer across genres. This episode is a bit of a ramble, but that's how we are when we geek out about things we like. We hope that you were able to pick up a recommendation or two to keep you company over the Halloween weekend.

Vlog Ep. 287: Plushies Perspectives

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about plushies! Cute stuffed animals and other characters have been a beloved part of childhood for many and can still signify many things in our adult years. Whether it's just the nostalgia invoked by these toys or maybe more contemporary memories based on how they were given and by whom, there is something about these fluffy things that convey so much meaning.

And obviously, Tobie and I have a rather significant collection of stuffed characters who make up part of the Sietch's community of geekery. We literally refer to many of them as "the kids" and they continue to get into various misadventures and comical moments. We should probably create more social media content with them - it may become quite popular.

Vlog Ep. 286: Tides of Time and Madness

Tonight's episode of #BaduyPride is about two separate but related 2-player games created by Kristian Čurla. These are Tides of Time and Tides of Madness, both published by Portal Games. They're based around a very tight system that results in some pretty strategic gameplay within a quick 20-30 minute timeframe.

The core system that drives both games is a great one that is easy to learn but still provides a fair amount of depth for newer and experienced players alike. And for a game of this depth, it also travels very well as the 18 cards in each box don't take up a lot of space. 2-player games are a unique niche in the gaming space but are very welcome companions when you're still in an extended quarantine.

Vlog Ep. 285: Halloween Parties

Just because we can't gather for things like parties doesn't mean we can't talk about them on #BaduyPride. So our topic for tonight was all about Halloween Parties and all the fun that comes with them. Not every costume event is a Halloween event and we found ourselves missing the time when more Halloween events were about being scary and not the festive stuff.

We don't have clear plans for Halloween this year and we also wanted to see if we could use today's episode as a venue for coming up with alternate plans that can be done from the safety of our homes. And there are still a fair number of things that people can try to do and we just might try something like a spooky tour or an escape room just to break the quarantine monotony.

Vlog Ep. 284: Candy Time

For this Tasty Tuesday episode of #BaduyPride, we talked all about CANDY! And since we already had a chocolate-focused episode some time back, we tried to focus a bit more on all the sugary treats - and MAN, that was a lot of ground to cover. Especially when most of our candy-related memories date all the way back to our childhood oh so many years ago.

And while we're still not experts on the "how" of candies in terms of their production and creation, it was fun to just appreciate the sheer variety of sweets out there. There are hard candies and chewy candies, sweets that come in powder form, and others shaped in all sorts of crazy sizes. And I guess we'll never run out of creative efforts to present candy in a new way as a lot of the shapes and styles tend to echo contemporary items of the time and what have you. How delightful.

Vlog Ep. 283: Last Night on Earth The Zombie Game

Today's episode of #BaduyPride is about one of the older games in our collection - the dice-rolling adventure game that is Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game. This 2-6 player game was created by Jason C. Hill and published by Flying Frog Games. It has players either in the role of our human heroes or the zombie antagonists as the two work against the other side in line with the chosen scenario.

As much as we love those very strategic European-style games, there's something to be said about a game as dependent on dice rolls as this one. It's a pretty unique system that presents a lot of challenges mainly because of the randomness of the game which is both frustrating and that's also the fun of all this.

Vlog Ep. 282: Lucifer: From Comics to Small Screen

Tonight's #BaduyPride discussion was another requested topic, this time about the now rather expansive Lucifer franchise. And while the original request was to talk about the most recent season specifically (which we haven't seen), we instead broadened things to talk about the origins of this version of the character, covered some of his key comic book moments, and of course, got around to discussing the TV series.

You can tell we're pretty big fans of the former Vertigo comic line that helped to launch the stories of the Endless, John Constantine, and of course the Lucifer side of their story world. And while that was a bit of a barrier for us when we first tried to get into the TV show, over time we've come to better appreciate it as an independent creative work that doesn't really tie too strongly to its source material. And it's a show that has had enough of a following to manage to stick around for 6 seasons, so that's something.

Vlog Ep. 281: Horror Tabletop RPGs

Today's Thursday edition of #BaduyPride was all about the unique storytelling world of horror-themed tabletop RPGs. And this can mean many different things to different people - something that we tried to tackle as we tried to define what we mean by a horror TRPG, at least for the context of our discussion.

Beyond the different games we mentioned as interesting things to try based on our gaming experience, the meat of today's discussion was talking about how to make such games work for your gaming group. It's important that expectations are clearly kept, provisions for safety are kept in mind, and everyone agrees to work with the tropes of the particular flavor of horror they're going to play as a game. At the very least, this is what works for us. And hopefully what we shared will work for many of you.

Vlog. Ep 280: Tusok Tusok and Inihaw

This Tasty Tuesday episode of #BaduyPride was all about fun smoky street food in the form of tusok-tusok and inihaw food. They don't have perfectly precise translations, but we can refer to the former as various types of grilled skewers while inihaw is a specific Filipino form of barbeque but also the general act of barbecue here as well.

Street food is a much-beloved aspect of our cuisine and I do have very fond memories of early street food adventures growing up. It was always something so risque, but at the same time delightful. And it's definitely something that we no longer have access to while in quarantine save for some sad delivery options. Hopefully, we can get out and enjoy some fun stuff again sometime soon.

Vlog Ep. 279: 50 Clues - The Leopold Trilogy

Today's #BaduyPride featured tabletop game is 50 Clues: The Leopold Trilogy. This set of immersive puzzles games puts players in the shoes of Maria, a woman who is determined to find her son in order to save the world from the menace of a figure known as Leopold. How she'll manage to get out of the mental institution she has been committed to in order to achieve this is the big challenge of the game. And add on a mature content warning for this particular narrative, and it makes for quite the compelling story.

Tobie and I enjoyed this experience and it made for a nice change of pace versus other puzzle games we've played. 50 Clues is a great reminder that there's still a lot of room in this game genre for more kinds of stories to be told with innovative game systems empowering them. And I'm super glad that Tobie found us copies of this trilogy of games so we got to experience this story in full.

Vlog Ep. 278: Movies + Fear

Today's #BaduyPride episode was all about the movies that we most associate with your fears. Which movie first scared you (regardless of genre)? What was your first actual horror movie? These were the sorts of questions we tried to tackle in this special episode to help kickoff the spooky month of October.

We're going to try to do more horror-related episodes this month because Tobie really loves this genre and this is the perfect month for it. While other people are rushing to celebrate Christmas, we're more than happy to focus on Halloween first and all the quirkiness that comes with that. And as part of what I mentioned today, I'll also do my best to watch a few other scary shows and movies to celebrate things properly with Tobie.
