Vlog Ep. 243: Fears and Phobias

Tonight's episode of #BaduyPride was all about different fears and phobias, because we wanted to wrap up Dune Week in a way that was worthy of a story franchise that gave us something as epic as The Litany Against Fear. And this felt like a nice way to end another long week as well, so it all worked out.

So we started this episode in classic Baduy Pride fashion by going through definitions of different phobias that are out there. We knew there are a lot of them, but actually going through them really stresses just how many things we can become afraid of. And I really was amused at how so many of those fears seem to be tied to different modern conveniences and technologies, which is mind-blowing. But ultimately fears must be faced, and we tried to share what tips we could for facing one's fears and making sure that you remain after the experience, as the litany says.

Vlog Ep. 242: The Road to Dune: Part One

Dune week continues on #BaudyPride, and today is when we talk about the actual upcoming Dune (Part One) movie directed by Denis Villeneuve. We had reacted to the first teaser trailer last year, but a lot has happened since then, including the movie's release schedule getting delayed by a year. And thus we figured it would be fun to do a sort of follow-up episode to go over some of the movie tie-in releases and other marketing efforts.

This episode also included my live reaction to Tobie surprising me with a custom Dune sandworm dice holder created by The Owlbear Scavenge. This is collectible is insanely adorable and terrifying at the same time and I am a happier geek because of it. Tobie loves catching me off guard with surprises like this and I guess this episode marks one of the instances when we managed to capture the moment on video.

Vlog Ep. 241: Spices and Flavors

Tonight's episode of #BaduyPride was all about spices, those delightful additives that give true flavor and diversity to meals. We included this in our lineup of Dune Week episodes because a particular (fictional) spice is a big deal in Dune, so that was enough to run with this here. And while we're not culinary experts, we do enjoy food.

So we covered the basics - clarifying the differences between spices and herbs to get that out of the way. We blew Tobie's mind about salt being a condiment and not a spice. And from there, the flavor journey truly began. And if there's anything we can take away from this discussion, is that we probably haven't even scratched the surface of how exciting the world of spices and other seasonings can be and we'll continue to experiment when we can.

Vlog Ep. 240: Dune Imperium

Today's episode of Baduy Pride kicks off Dune Week with one of our favorite new games, Dune Imperium by Dire Wolf Digital. Designed by Paul Dennen, this game supports 1-4 players (yes, it has a solo mode) who all vie for control of the desert planet of Arrakis. The deck building, worker placement game combines a lot of different elements into a very fun strategic game.

This was definitely one of the tabletop gems to come out of 2020 and I can't shake off the feeling that this game hasn't gotten as much attention as it could have. Sure, the movie got delayed a year and that probably threw off their marketing plans, but I really feel like this game deserves a lot more love, regardless of how you feel about the Dune franchise. And hopefully, this episode will help add our voice to support this really solid game.

Vlog Ep. 239: Dating Pet Peeves

Tonight's Friday #BaduyPride episode was all about dating pet peeves, and we had a lot of fun with all the different stories viewers shared during the stream. It's good to take a step back and laugh at these things whether they're seemingly ridiculous things that bother us or maybe the silly things that we're guilty of ourselves.

Pet peeves are ultimately unique to each person and so there's a lot of room for misunderstandings and all that crazy stuff. But I stand by my statement at the end where it boils down to how much the rest of the date is going to determine how bad a pet peeve really is. But I'm also excited about the thought of what Tobie brought up about how pet peeves might be totally different for a lot of the digital-first generations that are coming into their own. I wonder if anyone will chime in with their own quirky irks in the comments.

Vlog Ep. 238: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about another Disney+ show - this being The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It's been long enough to wait out most folks wanting to avoid spoilers, so we figured it was time. And this mini-series really had me and Tobie uncertain of how we felt about it. We liked certain aspects of the show but on the whole, it didn't quite feel all that "necessary" a show in the greater scheme of the MCU scheme of things.

It was interesting how we had different things that seemed to matter to us more while other things were just okay. And we managed to surface a lot of those thoughts over the course of this episode. But in all honesty, I think we're just more excited to talk about Loki once we find the time to do so. And we'll definitely try to get a friend or two to join us for that important discussion..

Vlog Ep. 237: Merienda and Snacks

Tonight's Tasty Tuesday episode of #BaduyPride is all about merienda - the special snack time that is a tradition for most Filipino households. We all have different ideas of what these afternoon snacks "should" be and that's what defined tonight's discussion. Thus we talked about how our merienda experiences changed from our early childhood at home to option defined by school cafeterias and then later what is available around your workplace.

One of the more interesting discussion points that came up as we talked about different snacks was the near-universal perception that certain snack vendors only come at certain times. Tobie and I were both of the belief that taho is a morning thing because taho vendors only come in the day while ice cream is a possible merienda snack because the carts would only come in the afternoons. Funny how that works out.

Vlog Ep. 236: Unboxing MIND MGMT The Psychic Espionage "Game"

Today marked another unboxing video for today's #BaduyPride Monday night board game feature. And we really had a treat for today - the newly released MIND MGMT: The Psychic Espionage "Game" as based on the Matt Kindt comic book series of the same name. This hidden movement game was created by Jay Cormier and Sen-Foong Lim and published by Off the Page Games.

We were kind of surprised at how quickly the game got over here from my US forwarding address and hopefully we'll be able to dive into the actual gameplay sooner rather than later. And wow, what a treat this unboxing turned out to be! The game is literally covered in references and clever trickery that totally embraces the unique tone of the comics. You can already feel that you don't need to be a fan to enjoy this but it will only enhance your experience if you're familiar with the source material.

Vlog Ep. 235: Celebrating Theme Parks

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about the joys of theme parks - or maybe amusement parks in general, even. It's kind of ironic to talk about entertainment spaces like these during a time when social distancing and quarantines are still kings. But it doesn't take away from our good memories of these experiences.

And as much as it was fun to talk about all the different things we loved about theme parks we've been to, I'm still more excited for the places we'll (hopefully) one day visit and experience. Maybe our big Japan trip will become a reality one day and we'll just go from theme park to theme park and live our absolutely geekiest lives. One can dream.

Vlog Ep. 234: Kilig Happy Moments

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about those kilig moments - the things that make your heart go flutter or makes the audience of a show go "aww...". We didn't quite know how to tackle such an expansive topic but we started by exploring different romance and romantic comic movies, which are often cited as the classic sources for kilig. The different lists we tried to explore certainly stressed how differently we can define what counts as a good romantic movie, but it was a fun experience all the same.

But beyond the movies and the romance, we also wanted to touch on the more platonic moments that still get the heart racing. And it was nice to have a lot of good friends on the show with us to help share in things and provide their own insights into what works for them. The months and months of quarantine have been very difficult for all of us and hopefully, tonight's episode acted as a good reminder of how we make one another feel because of how we matter to one another.

Vlog Ep. 233: Avatar: The Last Airbender

This episode of #BaduyPride is about the still powerful and beautiful series that is Avatar: The Last Airbender. I don't think any of us could have predicted at the time what an impact this animated Nickelodeon series would have on so many people. For those of us who have watched the series, I think it's fair to say that we've all been changed by its nuanced storytelling in one way or another.

This episode focused on the series that kicked everything off and is now forever remember for the 61 episodes that made up its 3 seasons. And there are all the different books, comics, video games, and even animated shorts that helped to further flesh out the world and give us more ways to celebrate the camaraderie and exploits of Team Avatar.

Vlog Ep. 232: Donuts and Holes

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was all about doughnuts or donuts or whatever else related pastries we could discuss as today's Tasty Tuesday topic. We also tested out our new webcam for the first time, so this episode has a lot of troubleshooting discussions with the live stream audience. Thank you all for your patience!

It's always fun to deep dive into a subject and see how niche we can make the conversation. Questions like what makes an eclair different from a Long John donut or whether we could make a tinola donut are all part of the regular craziness, especially when we really get Tobie excited to talk about food. And we super appreciate everyone who joined the live stream because your participation makes a WORLD of difference in how the show goes.

Vlog Ep. 231: The One About FRIENDS

Tonight's episode of #BaduyPride was all about that timelessly popular television sitcom - Friends. For one reason or another, this show about a group of 20-somethings navigating their lives in New York together continues to have near-universal appeal. And since I had finally gotten Tobie to watch all 10 seasons, we were finally in a place to talk about the show in earnest.

And what's more fun than talking about a great show than sharing the conversation with a good friend? We were lucky to get our friend Noel to join us as (1) we love him and (2) he's one of the biggest Friends fans that we know. And that's how this discussion went on for over 2 hours and it still felt like we could have gone on even longer.

Vlog Ep. 230: MCU Phase 4

For tonight's episode of #BaduyPride, we talked all about what is known so far about Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The way that Marvel Studios has done their best to keep their different movie projects tied together in a single story sitting has always been rather admirable. They haven't always been all that tightly connected, but they do make sense when put together.

The challenge of Phase 4 is that they have to do a lot to set up again given many of the actors' contracts have come to an end and they're no longer obliged to appear as the leads of future movies. Sure they still have some later Phase characters to work with as a primer, but the rest of the slate features a lot of new people coming in. And it's not just movies but also a heck of a lot of TV shows to boot, so there's a lot to look forward to.

Vlog Ep. 229: Let's Be Cheesy!

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about CHEESE because we've really codified Tasty Tuesdays as a content bucket for our little web show thing. We're never exactly big experts on the different foods we cover on the show but we are certainly food enthusiasts who have enjoyed many meals together over the years.

It's kind of bonkers just how many types of cheese are out there. And things don't stop at the varieties of the stuff but even the many ways they are enjoyed whether on their own or added to other food or subjected to additional cooking methods like frying, baking or even an open flame. There's a reason why cheese has become something akin to "chocolate for adults", as Tobie put it. And it was fun to talk about all that cheesy goodness today.

Vlog Ep. 228: Deep Sea Adventure

This episode of #BaduyPride focused on the tabletop game Deep Sea Adventure, created by Jun Sasaki and Goro Sasaki and published by Oink Games. This calling card box-sized game supports 2-6 players and is one of the rare Oink Games releases that don't require a minimum of 3 players. And while it's not our favorite game, it does make for a fun addition to any game night that doesn't involve overly complex rules.

I will never get over at the level of complexity these Oink Games hide in such small boxes. We own games that come in bigger boxes because of way more components that end up being simpler or less enjoyable. And this is just one of many delightful Oink Games experiences we look forward to celebrating on the show.

Vlog Ep. 227: About Personality Tests

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about different personality tests and indirectly other measures for categorizing or classifying people. As much as archetypes are very much a thing, the way tests have been developed to try to identify such personality quirks can be a little suspect, especially when no longer administered and interpreted by trained professionals but instead regurgitated as internet content.

To reiterate our conclusions in the video, we're not against the notion of personality types and archetypes. We're also not entirely against tests that try to help people figure out their personality types. What we are against is how people treat test results as a one-time, one-size-fits-all assessment of who you're supposed to be and you use that data point to define your life or rationalize (good or bad) behavior. There's a reason why we say we have free will. We just have to use it.

Vlog Ep. 226: The 4-Day Workweek

This episode of #BaduyPride was also based on a viewer suggestion and one that brought us back to talking about work. In this case, the subject of the episode was all about the possibility of a 4-day workweek, something that continues to get debated across the internet in different ways. And even how the 4-days break out in terms of these being the same number of working hours in a shorter period of time or actually reducing the total number of working hours in the week, either option has its pros and cons.

Given the ongoing pandemic, figuring out the values of alternate working arrangements like this certainly made for an interesting discussion. I was surprised that we managed to get past an hour and a half hashing this out and even considering other situations like what our working from home options are going to be like in the future when we have the option to go back to work. There is certainly a lot to think about.
