Vlog Ep. 294: Developing With The River

This Game Day Monday #BaduyPride discussion is all about The River, a 2-4 player board Sébastien Pauchon and Ismaël Perrin, and published by Days of Wonder. This is a game that involves both tile and worker placement but combines the two game mechanics in a way that results in a game with only moderate difficulty. And that's a gift in itself.

The River fills that niche of moderate games that could lead to more complex ones. It's not entirely gateway, but it's something quick that you can bring in between other games and still have time to teach it and play it a few times. The core mechanics are some pretty popular ones used in different games and you can totally help newer players discover more games of interest based on how they respond to this game.

Vlog Ep. 293: Doctor Who: The Card Game

In honor of TARDIS Day being this week, this episode of #BaduyPride is all about one of the better Doctor Who tabletop games around, this being Cubicle 7 Entertainment's Doctor Who: The Card Game. Designed by Martin Wallace, this game supports 3-4 players (ideally) in a time-traveling adventure to conquer one another's locations or successfully defend your own locations from incursion. The game features a generous amount of images from the show depicting the different characters whether these are just different incarnations of the Doctor himself, his companions, and of course his diverse collection of enemies.

It's hardly the greatest card game out there, but it's one whose main reverse drafting mechanic nicely fits with the theme of the series. That plus how this second edition of the game nicely spans a lot of the Doctor Who adventures we think of most fondly, and this game still has a valued place in our collection. And at the very least, it generates some very interesting scenarios that may never come up in the actual show.

Vlog Ep. 292: Encino Man and other Brendan Fraser Movies

Today's Friday night episode of #BaduyPride started as being about the 1992 movie Encino Man and expanded into a journey through Brendan Fraser's full movie (and television) filmography. This started as a way to make sure we didn't run out of things to say had we just talked about the caveman movie.

While a little lengthy given we went over an hour, this episode made for a pretty fun experience as we discovered interesting Brendan Fraser projects that we had never heard of but will definitely try to make time to watch soon. And there are little things like movies that only one of us have watched and now we want to catch the other one up ASAP.

Baduy Pride @ Twelve

This year marks our twelfth year together as a geeky couple and despite the global pandemic, I think we can still say that we couldn't be happier. As much as we're all under a lot of stress because of the unusual times we're all living in, we've also reinforced our bonds as partners. This is the only way we've managed to survive this extended quarantine situation as well as we have and how we continue to keep moving forward even when it feels like our world has ground to a halt.

I wish we could have arranged for a nice dinner somewhere or better yet a fun night with friends at O Bar. But instead, it has mostly been another busy workday save for the fact that I still got to surprise Tobie with a YouTube Music subscription. It's the little things that count, people!

Twelve years. 144 months. 4,380 days. 105,120 hours.

Not necessarily numbers that make for good song lyrics, but they still signify something special. I can't imagine what my life would have been like had Tobie never entered my life. And I am forever grateful for how he has helped me become a much better person, and a much happier one to boot! And the past year has become a literal demonstration of how we're capable of surviving just about anything for as long as we have one another.

I love you so much, Tobie! Thank you for always being there for me. Thank you for finding me. Thank you for choosing me in the way that I've chosen you.

Vlog Ep. 291: Working Together in Paleo

Tonight's episode of #BaduyPride was all about the cooperative board game Paleo! This 1-4 player game was created by Peter Rustemeyer and published by Hans im Glück. This has players controlling different tribes of prehistory men as they explore the land around them and try to survive the many dangers of the ancient world.

This game brings together some interesting mechanics, primarily based around card decks that represent where each player can choose to explore. The backs of the cards give a hint of what may lay ahead, but there's no guarantee as to whether the card offers an easy opportunity to forage or a dangerous struggle against a ferocious beast. And how the different players figure out how best to work together to gather resources and ultimately complete their mammoth painting is what defines this rather story-rich game experience.

Vlog Ep. 290: The One About Firefly

This Friday night episode of #BaduyPride was all about the Firefly franchise - loved by many but often best remembered as being a show canceled way too soon. With only 13 episodes under its belt, it's only half of what would be considered a regular US television series and yet it inspired legions of Browncoat fans who continue to keep the fire alive for this show.

Beyond our discussion of one of the board games last Monday, we had a lot of fun celebrating all that we love about this franchise in this episode. There's a lot to love about this show and maybe part of that love has to do with the sheer potential the series had and that has left us to fill in the gaps in the most creative ways. This is not to say it wouldn't have been awesome had it been allowed to continue - but we simply don't know, and thus we're left with a promise of what might have been. And as the years continue to roll by, we get to build up its mythos more and more, further elevating it into this nearly perfect thing with a limited TV series, a movie, two tabletop RPGs, and a good number of board games and card games.

Vlog Ep. 289: Firefly: The Game

After a period away, we're back to recording new #BaduyPride episodes and we started with a dive into the Firefly: The Game. Originally released in 2013, this 1-4 player game was created by Aaron Dill, John Kovaleski, and Sean Sweigart and published by Gale Force Nine. The game has had a good number of expansions until 2017 and we're still in the process of catching up with this particular game line.

This may be one of our favorite franchise-related board games in recent years and may be an essential acquisition for anyone who loves the Firefly franchise and wants to experience the show as a tabletop experience. It isn't necessarily the greatest game ever, but it's still a very strong one and we enjoyed the experience a lot. As we mentioned in the live stream, the game feels like a somewhat more streamlined Fortune & Glory (albeit a very different game system) but one that's very much a Firefly experience. And we're looking forward to playing more games in the 'Verse in the months and years to come.
