Vlog Ep. 261: "Exotic" Food

Today's Tasty Tuesday #BaduyPride episode was a viewer's request to talk about "exotic" food. And while the term isn't the most appropriate by modern standards, we're still the intention behind it was pretty good. The thing about food that is often termed to be exotic is really more about discovering new things or trying dishes you may not have ever tried before. That's what adds a bit of excitement to things.

Great food experiences tend to rely on keeping an open mind and putting yourself out there. And it can also help when you have someone helping you on your culinary journey. It really does help to share and share alike and when you really love something, it's fun to introduce that meal to others. And while it's a lot harder to discover new food while in quarantine, I'm sure all get our chance to do so again soon enough once it's safe enough.

Vlog Ep. 260: Tiny Epic Quest

Tonight's #BaduyPride Gaming Monday discussion was all about Tiny Epic Quest published by Gamelyn Games. This 1-4 player strategy game was created by Scott Almes and packs a surprising amount of rich gaming into a very compact box. This release within the larger Ting Epic line of board games also heralded the innovation of ITEMeeples, which are plastic Meeple-shaped tokens that include peg holes that can be used to attach different weapons and other items to them.

It took a fair of time to discuss all the different aspects of the game, but it is still pretty remarkable how all that comes together to present a very solid game experience. It's still one of our favorite ITEMeeple games and right up there with the likes of Tiny Epic Galaxies and subsequent ITEMeeple releases haven't quite lived up to the joy of this set.

Vlog Ep. 259: Another Quarantine Birthday Episode

This episode of #BaduyPride was dedicated to birthdays and their related celebrations. This pandemic and the accompanying lockdown has continued to make celebrating anything more of a challenge. And while we still can't have parties with friends and family, at the very least we could look back at all the things that we love about birthdays in the past and use those ideas as fuel for the future.

And our Baduy Pride viewers really came through tonight with a lot of great stories of the best food to eat, the different party games, and even the nuances of birthday practices and beliefs. I'm sure more than a few people got hungry during the discussion because birthday food may be among the best food out there. It made for a delightful and mostly nostalgic discussion and we hope everyone enjoyed as much as we did.

Vlog Ep. 258: The Adventures of Tintin

This episode of #BaduyPride is all about one of my favorite comic franchises growing up - The Adventures of Tintin as created by Georges Remi better known by his pen name Hergé. Ever since I received a copy of Destination Moon as a birthday gift, I was hooked on the series and would spend a better part of my life collecting the rest of the books.

Thankfully, Tobie also had some history with the series before we got together and he totally supported my Tintin mania over the years. and now I'm largely happy with the state of my collection but I continue to celebrate my love for this young reporter. And hopefully, this episode will help inspire new fans to get into the comics, cartoons, or even just the movie because Tintin deserves the love.

Vlog Ep. 257: Pizza Parley

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about the now-go-to delivery food option for bigger groups - PIZZA! And it was fun to sort of going through our personal history with pizza starting from it being a fancier option to eat as a sit-down restaurant experience to how it is now most commonly associated with convenience food. And I guess we had a lot more to say about pizza than I had expected.

We super enjoy these Tasty Tuesday discussions since we tend to get a lot more people on the live stream on Tuesday nights. Then again, food is a lot more relatable than some of our rather niche geeky interests - and who can say no to pizza? Even while on keto, I've been known to still indulge every now and then with the more expensive keto versions.

Vlog Ep. 256: Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game

This Monday night episode of #BaduyPride was all about one of our favorite board games - Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game. This cooperative deduction game has 1-5 players becoming Antares Detectives tasked to solve some pretty challenging cases. The game was created by Ignacy Trzewiczek and published by Portal Games with a story by Przemysław Rymer and Jakub Łapot.

We super love this game because of how it strikes a great balance between pure deductive reasoning and more recent board games. It truly lives up to its "Modern Crime Board Game" name with its creative use of online resources and the proprietary Antares Database. I just hope that they maintain the site for a very long time so more and more people get to play this amazing game. Cannot recommend it enough whether for marathon game nights or remote play while we remain in quarantine.

Vlog Ep. 255: Living Through the Pandemic

This special episode of #BaduyPride is our contribution to the ongoing conversation of getting through the COVID-19 pandemic while living in a place like the Philippines. We have one of the longest quarantines in the world and just as our daily cases numbers continue to climb to new heights it feels like there's no end in sight to all this madness.

And that's what this episode was for - to focus on ways to get through these difficult times and to continue to be productive. It's not about being overly optimistic, but making sure that we continue to move forward, protect those we love the most, and help one another to get through this. A lot of things are beyond our control, yes. But we can focus on what we can directly affect and stay home as much as possible while taking all the necessary safety precautions when we do need to step out. We need to stay connected to friends and family and we need to do our best to stay balanced and know went to seek help.

We will get through this.

Vlog Ep. 254: Reviving Pushing Daisies

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about one of our favorite lost shows - Pushing Daisies. This unique Bryan Fuller creation has been described as a "forensic fairy tale" and it is all this and more. It has a charming love story. It has intriguing murder mysteries. It has musical numbers. And it even has an adorable dog in it, too.

Tobie and I really love this show so much and it's one of the earliest programs that we bonded over when we first got together. I remember celebrating every episode with him as they came out because it just resonated with both of us on so many levels. But it was a show that ended earlier than any of us had expected, has a messy wrap-up, and isn't exactly widely available on the more popular streaming sites. But we'll continue to celebrate it and hopefully get more friends to discover the show in the first time.

Vlog Ep. 253: Instant Noodles

Today's #BaduyPride episode was all about the joy of instant noodles. It made for quite the delightful food focus for today plus who would have thought that it would make for such a meaty topic to talk about? There are so many kinds of instant noodles whether soups or dry noodles or ones that come with extra dehydrated meaty things. But most of them have been delightful innovations in food technology.

And while we don't really eat instant noodles anymore because of my efforts to avoid excessive carbs, we still have some pretty colorful memories of them. And I think that it has become one of those foods that everyone can relate to on some level. It's hard to avoid them for your entire life and maybe you shouldn't have to. Good times or bad, they can still make for a nice hot meal.

Vlog Ep. 252: Startups by Oink Games

Our featured tabletop game for this episode of #BaduyPride was certainly a deceptively deep one. Like most other Oink Games, Startups manages to fit a lot of fun into a roughly calling card-sized box. But this 3-7 player game created by Jun Sasaki is also a brilliant effort to convert the complex world of stocks and trading into a tight, competitive game that you can carry around in your pocket.

As you can see in the video, Tobie and I really love this game and we had a lot of fun sharing our enthusiasm for this card game with everyone. It truly is a clever game with a lot of potential for deep strategy. And there's no surefire way for winning as the mix of players, the hidden cards, and all the other factors of the game make each round of Startups unique and brilliant.

Vlog Ep. 251: Feeling Lucky?

To cap off this week all about lucky and unlucky things, our Friday the 13th #BaduyPride episode was all about personal beliefs, practices, and traditions about luck or the ways in which people ward off bad luck. And whether you truly believe in luck being a thing or not, I think it's safe to say that we've all been raised, taught or influenced to incorporate one or more such practices just out of habit.

We super appreciate the many viewers who joined tonight's stream and made the discussion even more fulfilling as everyone had their stories to share. While it was never the goal of this episode to prove or disprove the veracity of any of these superstitions, it was fun to sort of catalog different ideas that have been going around, especially the very nuanced ones. And most importantly, tonight's episode really felt like we were all just hanging out as we dissected tonight's topic.

Vlog Ep. 250: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Tonight's fandom-focused #BaduyPride episode focused on the delightfully "unlucky" franchise of A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket (the pen name for Daniel Handler). Whether you read the 13 books, watched the 2004 movie or followed the 3-season Netflix series, the franchise has had a fair amount of life to it and has attracted a good number of fans across the different media types.

We started with the 2004 movie and enjoyed the Netflix series together. I've already read the core books and Tobie hopes to make time to read them as well just to share in my delight for the series. I hold that each version of the story is a treasure in its own right and brings something unique to the table. So there's more than enough room to celebrate the quirks and joys of the series regardless of which one tickled your fancy. And that's pretty fortunate indeed.

Vlog Ep. 249: Lucky Food

Because all of our #BaduyPride episodes are about lucky (and unlucky) things this week, our Tasty Tuesday episode was all about the idea of lucky food! And given how central food is to our daily lives, it's only natural there are a lot of beliefs and superstitions tied to food and how they relate with life events or holidays.

If I were to pick, some of my favorite food traditions include the likes of needing to eat long noodles for long life or good fortune and maybe the mandatory nature of birthday cakes. Even now that I try to minimize my carb intake, I'll still have a keto-friendly cake for my birthday because there are some traditions you just can't let go of.

Vlog Ep. 248: Rattle, Battle, Grab the Loot!

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was all about a delightful family-friendly game with pirates! This of course is Rattle, Battle, Grab the Loot created by Ignacy Trzewiczek and published by Portal Games. This 2-5 player dice-rolling game has players as rival pirates trying to get the most loot in order to become the most infamous pirate.

I really appreciate when our desire to have more of a theme for these episodes results in us digging up games that we haven't played in a while. We actually had to review the rules very quickly right before we started the episode since it has been a few years since we last played the game. We do like it, but given the size of our collection, it's very easy for certain games to get lost in the shuffle of newer releases. And this pandemic has not been at all helpful in giving us opportunities to play more board games with friends. But this is definitely a game we need to bring back into circulation a bit more.

Vlog Ep. 247: Broadening Your Network

Tonight's Friday Night #BaduyPride topic was all about broadening your network because making friends is important for both your personal and professional life. It was certainly an interesting topic to cover and we're glad that it was sent in the request queue. I can only hope we did it justice, even if just from our perspective.

Some may just choose to fast-forward to the end of this video now that it's no longer a live experience because we summarize our key message at the end. As much as we shared a lot of more specific tips all throughout the video, we were able to bring it down to a more basic level as we wrapped up and provided some clearer tips on how to move forward. And I hope that this proves useful for folks whether if they've just entered the workforce or they're already established. Everyone can benefit from a reminder to be more decent to other people.

Vlog Ep. 246: Star Trek Lower Decks

We focus more on different fandoms on Thursdays for #BaduyPride and today's episode is about Star Trek: Lower Decks, the adult animated series that we thought we'd hate but ended up falling in love with. And it's not because it's an irreverently funny show - it turned out to be a unique celebration of years of Star Trek fandom in a contemporary and hilarious package.

I do feel like the show has something for everyone, whether you're a diehard Trekkie or someone who has never seen a Star Trek show in their life. And I'm curious to see what sort of fans shows like this will inspire. Embracing diversity has always been a central part of the Star Trek mythos and a greater variety of fan voices will make things even better in the long term.

Vlog Ep. 245: Lugaw | Goto | Arroz Caldo

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about dissecting the differences between several rice porridge dishes, namely lugaw, goto, arroz caldo, and even congee thrown in for good measure. Yes, this is similar to the previous episode about the different tomato sauce-based stews and it was suggested by the same person around the same time. But given how many viewers joined us tonight, it certainly made for a surprisingly popular discussion!

And porridges occupy such a special place in our communal experience - they have the comfort of soup but also feel more nourishing, mainly because of the rice component. And it was certainly a delightful exploration together with the viewers as we shared different stories related to these dishes and when they were most important. And whether you're part of Tobie's camp about lugaw being "chocolate-free champorado" or you also think arroz caldo is "green lugaw" meant to be eaten cold, there's room for you in our circle of geekery.

Vlog Ep. 244: Star Wars: Unlock!

For this episode of #BaduyPride, our featured tabletop game is the franchise-specific escape room game, Star Wars: Unlock! This puzzle game combines the joy of the Unlock! franchise (as mentioned in our episode about escape room games) with the far, far fantasy of Star Wars. And this game really surprised us as it combined both elements well and managed to put us as players into brand-new Star Wars adventures.

And while a lot of times it can feel like "selling out" when an existing game adopts a franchise-related theme as a reskin, this was a great collaboration. Then again, Unlock! has always had a lot of great storytelling potential and we also loved their thematic works like the games based on things like Sherlock Holmes, The Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Wonderland, to cite a few notable ones. And hopefully, this won't be the last of these efforts for the Unlock team.
