Vlog Ep. 167: The Lost Art of Photo Albums

Tobie came up with the awesome topic for this episode of #BaduyPride - this being all about classic physical photo albums. There's a lot of love that went into creating those things as a creative way to showcase memories and pretty much curate nostalgia. And we don't necessarily get to do the same thing anymore with the rise of digital photography and social media feeds.

It was nice to reflect on how we used to take photos before with film cameras and the additional hurdles of getting photos developed by strangers. But I think there are ways to apply the same amount of effort to curating our digital media memories - I'm just undecided how to do so in a manner where I actually share the results with friends.

Vlog Ep. 166: The Shady Trees of Photosynthesis

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was all about the board game Photosynthesis, created by Hjalmar Hach with art by Sabrina Miramon. The version we own was published by Blue Orange and is an interesting strategic experience for 2-4 players.

While some of our board game episodes do tend to run long, this one was just on time, which is kind of nice. But it also reflects the sort of tight gaming experience offered by this Photosynthesis, which is funny for something about trees. Trees are not peaceful and zen-like, people. Trees are SHADY.

Vlog Ep. 165: Quarantine Check-in - Week 55

It's been a while since we've had one of these #BaduyPride quarantine check-in episodes, so we figured it was as good a time as any to check in on everyone. And we had decided to do this episode a week ago, which was well before the big ECQ announcement. So year, what a week, right?

Ultimately, these quarantine check-ins are our way to taking a breather and reaching out to viewers who may also be feeling the stress of the pandemic on multiple levels. And while these episodes sound like a bit of a ramble at times, ultimately it's about finding ways to cope, focusing on the things that we can control within our limited spheres of influence, and doing our best to get through these difficult times together.

Vlog Ep. 164: Friday Night with the Divine Divas

We really enjoyed talking to the Divine Divas in this episode of #BaduyPride! Precious Paula Nicole, Vinas Deluxe, and Brigiding aren't just amazing drag queens, but they're also a lot of fun to hang out with and we enjoyed learning more about how they became friends and came up with the Divine Bar during this pandemic given our 3+ hours live stream with them.

And as much as we've already spoken with different drag queens on the show, it continues to amaze us how different everyone's perspectives on drag end up being. Every drag queen has their own journey into the craft and ends up defining their own take on the medium. And we'll continue to try to get more fabulous queens on the show to help them share their views of the art with everyone because this art form is amazing and is worthy of celebration.

Vlog Ep. 163: Battlestar Galactica

Today's #BaduyPride was dedicated to our love for Battlestar Galactica - particularly the 2004 reimagined series developed for television by Ron Moore. What started as a 3-hour mini-series was followed by a 4-season show, numerous webisodes, at least two movies, and a prequel TV series as well.

Despite the show being over 15 years old at this point, we made sure to avoid major spoilers in our discussion for the franchise because it is THAT good and remains a shining example of what great science fiction dramatic television can look like. And the position that BSG maintains in my heart has only truly been challenged by the likes of The Expanse as of late - it's really such an amazing piece of fiction and one that Tobie and I will always love.

Vlog Ep. 162: Feeling Trapped

Today's episode of #BaduyPride was a fairly heavy one but also a rather important one. Tobie suggested we talk about the different circumstances we feel trapped in light of our latest phase of quarantine in Metro Manila (and some nearby provinces).

And we figured it would make for a good discussion just to talk through such moments and remind ourselves that we're not entirely helpless and that we still have choices and freedoms available to us. We provided some ideas for how to cope with such difficult circumstances but ultimately the power to do so is within all of us. And when we feel weakest, all the more we can always reach out to friends and other loved ones because we face the challenges of the world together.

Vlog Ep. 161: The Forbidden Games

Today's #BaduyPride tabletop games episode focused on a series of games that Tobie and I love a lot. This being the Forbidden line of games created by Matt Leacock and published by Gamewright. This is from the same man who brought us both the Pandemic franchise and my niche favorite Thunderbirds board game, there's a lot of core elements that we love across all these games.

These three games, Forbidden Island, Forbidden Desert, and Forbidden Sky each provide unique cooperative gaming experiences that provide a great mix of fun and challenge. They do relatively feel like they're on a scale with Island being relatively the easiest and Sky being the hardest, all are worth the time to learn and enjoy with friends and family around a shared game table.

Vlog Ep. 160: Drag Academy PH

Tonight's #BaduyPride was an AMAZING episode with some of the faculty of the first-of-its-kind Drag Academy PH. We're super thankful that our guest queens MC BLCK, MRS. TAN, and CLEA TORRES for making the time to be with us for this 3+ hour discussion of so many aspects of drag culture and artistry, particularly from a Philippine perspective.

I'm glad that we were able to facilitate such a meaningful discussion with so many well-spoken drag artists - and generally without incident. It's already tricky to manage a good interview/conversation with just one guest, what more three very passionate individuals who had a lot to share with our viewers. This episode just stresses that we need to do more of these guest shows and continue to share our platform with other friends and individuals that we want to support.

Vlog Ep. 159: PORK!

Today's #BaduyPride was another food-centric one, this one being all about PORK. And of course, we were happy to spend an hour discussing one of the world's favorite proteins and all our different explorations, experiences, and celebrations of it.

As is the nature of any time we talk about food, this inevitably crossed over into our discussions of how my diet has adapted because of keto and what pork products I can and can't eat given these restrictions. And with a few viewers who may not have the same level of keto dedication as I do watching the show, it made for an interesting sub-plot of sorts as we kept clarifying which items were and were not keto.

Vlog Ep. 158: Cartoons of the Early 2000s

Today's #BaduyPride episode is a long overdue request to cover the cartoons of the years 2000-2009, in the same vein of previous episodes on the cartoons of the 80's and the 2010s. It was hard to name these cartoons off the tops of our heads and once we started to dig into things...yeah, the results were interesting.

This episode had us mostly just reading off random titles from an IMDb list of over 600 cartoons released in the early 2000s that...we mostly had never heard of. Sure there were the more notable and memorable shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Wars: Clone Wars (AND Star Wars: The Clone Wars). But there were even more that were almost alien to us, all of which just stress that we're old or there's just so much content released for younger viewers in the pre-school age bracket.

Vlog Ep. 157: Pandemic - The Board Game

In "celebration" of our one-year anniversary of Metro Manila being under community quarantine, today's #BaduyPride episode was all about the board game where we actually get to beat diseases - Pandemic! This now-classic 2008 cooperative board game was created by Matt Leacock and supports 2-4 players or 2-5 players or 1-6 players, depending on which expansions you own.

We totally love this game and it stands as one of the best cooperative games out there that really presents a worthy challenge for players. And as much as the expansions all add additional layers of difficulty and challenge, they also add a lot of fun and new nuances and story elements that make each game even more unique and fulfilling. We've deferred from playing during this extended lockdown, but maybe we should dust off the game again for comeback sessions.

Vlog Ep. 156: Pi Day 2021

We had a LOT of fun with this Pi Day edition of #BaduyPride given we still gave due respect to the number π but also to talk about many different pastries including pies, tarts, and turnovers. It was just what we needed to end the weekend on a most geeky note.

Pi Day will always be special to me given my deep appreciation for the irrational number and what it has represented to me on a personal level. But then I am kinda glad that we took the time to look into what the heck defines a pie versus other pastries. Such learning! Much knowledge. Wow.

Vlog Ep. 155: Dancing Geeks

Tonight's episode of #BaduyPride was all about dancing! We got to talk about our personal histories when it comes to dancing ranging from early school performances to how we ended up dancing together at O Bar. We don't claim to be great dancers in any sort of professional capacity, but we do enjoy whatever you want to call the motions we end up doing.

I was rather amused that people were surprised at my heavy metal most pit path and I'm sure more than a few took some time to absorb Tobie's description of how ravers of his time would dance alone together. And while I'm not ready to show people my limited tap dancing skills, I do really miss playing dance games like Dance Dance Revolution and DanceManiaX back in the day.

Vlog Ep. 154: Learning New Things

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was all about learning new things. And while none of us are obligated to be voluntarily productive throughout this period of pandemic and quarantine, it's still nice to celebrate any upskilling or personal leveling up that we've managed to achieve recently. And that's what we sought out to celebrate in this episode - talking about all the things that we now know how to do or at the very least are getting better at.

It is rather surprising how many new skills we've managed to pick up. Our new skills including me learning how to bake, Tobie learning more about working with Unity, and both of us learning to cut each other's hair, among others. As much as we can all joke about 2020 being a wasted year, you might be surprised at how things have changed over the past year.

Vlog Ep. 153: The One About Socks

Today's #BaduyPride episode was all about the crazy, colorful, creative sets of socks we've gathered in recent years. What started as the occasional quirky gift has grown into a serious collection of different prints and patterns and that we mix and match as yet another article of clothing that we can wear thematically related sets of as a couple.

I like these lighter topics because they can become unusually engaging, especially once friends and other viewers start chiming in their insights in the comments. And that's the joy of live stream content like this - the viewers help shape the experience and make things even more interesting for everyone.

Vlog Ep. 152: Conveyor Card Drafting Fun with Sushi Go!

Today's Monday night #BaduyPride tabletop games discussion was focused on the delightful card drafting game Sushi Go! created by Phil Walker-Harding. For the purposes of this video, we used our copy of Sushi Go Party! as published by Gamewright, which features our favorite art style for the game. The base game supports 2-5 players but the party edition pushes things all the way up to 8 players.

It's rare that we buy a game based on its appearance, but I guess we really got lucky when we came across that open demo copy of the game at the store when we first saw it. It was one of our first experiments with a game we knew little about and that somehow led to us buying the game three times already across its different versions.

Tune in tomorrow at the same time as we tackle...cute socks!

Vlog Ep. 151: Spoiler Discussion for the WandaVision Finale

As a follow-up to our WandaVision spoiler discussion after episode 7 aired, here's the #BaduyPride spoiler discussion after the big WandaVision series finale! The creative team managed to create something rather brilliant and amazing all within the confines of 9 episodes. And we're all super thankful this show exists.

Ultimately, Tobie and I enjoyed the show a LOT and it remains to be one of the most unique and interesting pieces of television entertainment that we've experienced in a while. If this is any indication of the quality of MCU television content we're going to get from Disney+ moving forward, then there's a lot to be excited for. Otherwise, WandaVision has just set a VERY high bar for all future Marvel shows on the streaming platform.

Vlog Ep. 150: Baduy Pride Before Baduy Pride

Wow, we made it to 150 episodes of #BaduyPride, guys! And it's all thanks to all you who have supported the show thus far.

Today's episode was all about the history of Baduy Pride, going back to how we coined the phrase, how it became the name of this blog, and eventually the name of our live stream vlog. We tried to look back at which episodes we enjoyed the most and we also took some time to talk about possible plans for the future.

Vlog Ep. 149: Surviving Small Talk

Tonight's #BaduyPride was all about surviving the challenge of small talk in different situations. And the small talk "problem" hasn't entirely gone away despite the shift to working from home and most of our social interactions being online ones. Beyond just checking out of the conversation, we did our best to cover different "strategies" for sort of navigating those sorts of social situations.

In summary, focus on finding common ground while not being afraid to step away from the conversation entirely if it's not working out for you. Small talk is just filler talk before more important things happen or as a quick way to assess whether or not you might want to talk more or become friends eventually. But if things aren't working out, then they're not working out so move on.

Vlog Ep. 148: The One About Dreams

Tonight's #BaduyPride was all about dreams, which is sort of the second part of last week's episode about sleep, which was suggested by the same person. And we tried to be as thorough in our discussion of the topic as usual including different dream concepts, lucid dreaming, and even a few tips and tricks for hopefully shifting dreams in a preferred direction.

As someone who rarely remembers much about his dreams, I figured that I wasn't really going to have a lot to say about this subject. I did my best to chime in, but Tobie was the real star of the show in this instance. And seriously, Tobie has had some CRAZY dreams and I'm also challenged to remember even half of them.

Vlog Ep. 147: Rolling for Quests with Dice Forge

#BaduyPride Mondays are dedicated to tabletop games and today's featured game is Dice Forge, as designed by Régis Bonnessée and published by Libellud. This 2-4 player game centers around a unique game mechanic where players are allowed to purchase new die faces for their dice, thus allowing them to potentially shape future rolls to fit one's strategy.

We've often joked that Tobie has terrible luck with games that rely on dice rolling as the main mechanic, which may explain our larger focus on worker placement and other euro-style games. But Dice Forge's dice-changing mechanic makes you feel like you have better chances as the game progresses, although Tobie does still tend to get weird low results because that's just how things work. It doesn't make the game any less fun though.
