Vlog Ep. 303: 2021 Geeky Year in Review

For our last episode of #BaduyPride for 2021, we decided to do a sort of round-up of all the different geeky things we loved this year. We had already done an episode just about the games we enjoyed this year last Tuesday, so this episode took a broader perspective covering everything from movies, TV shows, books, and other things we enjoy.

It's easy to want to fall into the trap of investing a lot of time to talk about all the things we didn't like this year, of which I'm sure there were a lot. But it's very much in the spirit of Baduy Pride to get into the practice of finding things to meaningfully celebrate without necessarily taking an unrealistic perspective towards the world around us. It's something that can feel quite emotionally fulfilling and I hope that viewers walk away with a lighter feeling because of the reminders of the many fun things we still experienced this year.

Vlog Ep. 302: Favorite Games of 2021

Because it's time for end-of-the-year wrap-up stuff, this gaming-centric episode of #BaduyPride was all about our favorite or most-memorable games of 2021. We didn't limit ourselves to board games that were published this year or anything like that. Instead, we tried to cover all sorts of games that we've played this year regardless of their time of initial release across all different channels.

We played a lot of different games this year whether board games, card games, computer games, role-playing games, and other interesting stuff. So it was hard to just come up with an arbitrary list of top 5 or 10 games per type, so instead, we just did what we also do and gushed geekily over all the games that we enjoyed this year. And no regrets there - we had a lot of fun revising all the different games we experienced this year and we have so many others to look forward to in the year to come.

Vlog Ep. 301: All About Santa

Tonight's episode of #BaduyPride was once again related to the coming holidays - in this case, we decided to talk about everything Santa Claus! Repeated spoiler warnings for kids who may not want to learn too much about Santa Claus. You have been warned.

There's a certain special magic to Santa Claus, whether you just appreciate his popular representations in fiction, the power of his mythos, or the fond memories born of family tradition. And that's the role Santa plays in many of our lives - a way to believe in magic and to still have a sense of wonder. Believing in Santa Claus is believing in something beyond what we consider to be normal and mundane, and that can be something truly powerful.

Vlog Ep. 300: Dead of Winter

This episode of #BaduyPride was our attempt to tie into this being Christmas week by finding one of the few games that we have that include an actual Santa Claus. Surprisingly, this is the semi-cooperative zombie game Dead of Winter created by Jonathan Gilmour and Isaac Vega and published by Plaid Hat Games. This 2-5 player game is the first to use their now-signature Crossroads game system to add a strong narrative to an already very strategic game.

You can feel that a lot of thought went into this game given all the different moving parts that come together to create a very immersive experience. The Crossroads cards, while rather random, really do give a strong sense of tension that helps build a unique game atmosphere for the game. We also go into which of the expansions may be worth your time in this episode, so be sure to check it out!

Vlog Ep. 299: Our Second Home Called O Bar

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was all about O Bar, a place that is more than "just" a bar or some other "gay club".  We obviously love the place like a second home given all my many videos of the drag performances and other events there and other good stuff. we still wanted to dedicate another episode to celebrating the legacy of the bar and its recent re-opening

Of course, the episode managed to extend for about two hours as we recounted various stories across our history with O Bar. I'm sure we covered a number of these stories in other Baduy Pride episodes, but it's never too soon to bring up old stories again, I guess. And it was nice to solve the little "mystery" of the person who greeted us the last time we were at O Bar to tell us he watches the show. Hooray internet connection!

Vlog Ep. 298: Exit: The Game - Advent Calendar

This is a special episode of Baduy Pride that goes beyond our typical board game discussions. This video is three different types of content in one - first, it's a discussion video about the Exit: The Game series, escape room games, and advent calendars. Second, it's a bit of an unboxing video as we open up this advent calendar game for the first time on camera. And finally, it's a playthrough session of the first "day" of this advent calendar of puzzles. And we totally had a LOT of fun with this.

This was a different sort of episode, but thankfully escape room puzzle games like this are pretty easy to jump into quickly. There aren't many games that we can quickly determine how to play right of the box to the point that we can immediately do a demo for everyone. I don't think we're going to be able to do this on a regular basis, but we'll certainly revisit this whenever we have a game that supports the episode format.

Vlog Ep. 297: Metaverses and Multiverses

This episode of #BaduyPride tried to cross beyond the worlds of Kingdom Hearts as we explored the ideas of metaverses and multiverses and what it may all mean. Both have become sort of buzzwords in their respective fields of tech and movies - but their potential is hardly limited to that.

We ended up talking for quite a while, but there's a lot to be said about both subjects. We probably could have split this episode into two separate discussions and I strongly suspect that we'll end up revisiting both of these topics at some point in time or another depending on how things continue to progress and develop in the coming months. Stay tuned!

Vlog Ep. 296: Talisman: Kingdom Hearts

Today's episode of #BaduyPride was focused on a surprising franchise board game - Talisman: Kingdom Hearts. While we do love the Kingdom Hearts franchise, the game Talisman isn't the greatest one around as it still reflects a lot of the design elements from the period of its release. But there was clearly a lot of love for the video game franchise in this game and the result was a beautiful marriage of the two elements.

While it's still not the best game ever, but there's a lot to love here. The game components are beautiful and the attention to detail is very impressive. The gameplay moves steadily along, especially when compared to older editions of Talisman. But all the pretty Kingdom Hearts bits help distract players from the lengthy playtime.

Vlog Ep. 295: The One About Doctor Who

This episode of #BaduyPride is all about the unique franchise that is Doctor Who. We originally meant to discuss our favorite Time Lord last week in time for TARDIS day, but one thing led to another and we had to reschedule. But hey, it's never a bad time to talk about the Doctor and his adventures across all of time and space because there's still so much to love and celebrate about the series, or the franchise, as a whole.

There are a lot of elements that have come together over the years to sort of "define" what the experience is like. We have the many incarnations of the Doctor, the many enemies, and antagonists that have changed and evolved over the history of the show, the diverse Companions who have helped the Doctor in their own unique way and so much else. And it's also way more than "just" a TV show with countless books, audio dramas, toys, and other collectibles all giving us new ways to celebrate this amazing character.
