Vlog Ep. 313: The Jurassic Park Franchise

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about the geekily epic Jurassic Park franchise. Most know it mainly for the movies, but we did our best to cover all forms this franchise has taken starting from the novels and even the few games created based on the stories. It was quite a colorful discussion and there's so much to celebrate about these dinosaurs and the people constantly trying to escape from them.

I think the biggest revelation is just how much we love the original movie over pretty much everything else in the franchise. And that says a lot about the visionary work that crafted that movie experience. And while it feels like a no-brainer that a movie about dinosaurs would be popular, the fact that it was done so well is what has helped it become the juggernaut that it is now. And this is a large part of the reason we love Dinosaur Island so much.

Vlog Ep. 309: The Many Masters of the Universe

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about the many incarnations of the Masters of the Universe line over the years. What started as a clever toy concept with a multi-platform marketing strategy has managed to grow into a whole other media empire on its own. And we did our best to walk through the history of the toys, the cartoons, the comics, and the movies in our own geeky way.

And there was a LOT to cover, admittedly. I figured we could just focus on the cartoons, but that would discount the contributions of everything from the different toylines to the mini-comics that told a completely different story. And people are bound to like different aspects of this franchise, which says a lot about how much effort was put into innovating this franchise to appeal to diverse audiences over the years.

Vlog Ep. 303: 2021 Geeky Year in Review

For our last episode of #BaduyPride for 2021, we decided to do a sort of round-up of all the different geeky things we loved this year. We had already done an episode just about the games we enjoyed this year last Tuesday, so this episode took a broader perspective covering everything from movies, TV shows, books, and other things we enjoy.

It's easy to want to fall into the trap of investing a lot of time to talk about all the things we didn't like this year, of which I'm sure there were a lot. But it's very much in the spirit of Baduy Pride to get into the practice of finding things to meaningfully celebrate without necessarily taking an unrealistic perspective towards the world around us. It's something that can feel quite emotionally fulfilling and I hope that viewers walk away with a lighter feeling because of the reminders of the many fun things we still experienced this year.

Vlog Ep. 293: Doctor Who: The Card Game

In honor of TARDIS Day being this week, this episode of #BaduyPride is all about one of the better Doctor Who tabletop games around, this being Cubicle 7 Entertainment's Doctor Who: The Card Game. Designed by Martin Wallace, this game supports 3-4 players (ideally) in a time-traveling adventure to conquer one another's locations or successfully defend your own locations from incursion. The game features a generous amount of images from the show depicting the different characters whether these are just different incarnations of the Doctor himself, his companions, and of course his diverse collection of enemies.

It's hardly the greatest card game out there, but it's one whose main reverse drafting mechanic nicely fits with the theme of the series. That plus how this second edition of the game nicely spans a lot of the Doctor Who adventures we think of most fondly, and this game still has a valued place in our collection. And at the very least, it generates some very interesting scenarios that may never come up in the actual show.

Vlog Ep. 292: Encino Man and other Brendan Fraser Movies

Today's Friday night episode of #BaduyPride started as being about the 1992 movie Encino Man and expanded into a journey through Brendan Fraser's full movie (and television) filmography. This started as a way to make sure we didn't run out of things to say had we just talked about the caveman movie.

While a little lengthy given we went over an hour, this episode made for a pretty fun experience as we discovered interesting Brendan Fraser projects that we had never heard of but will definitely try to make time to watch soon. And there are little things like movies that only one of us have watched and now we want to catch the other one up ASAP.

Vlog Ep. 290: The One About Firefly

This Friday night episode of #BaduyPride was all about the Firefly franchise - loved by many but often best remembered as being a show canceled way too soon. With only 13 episodes under its belt, it's only half of what would be considered a regular US television series and yet it inspired legions of Browncoat fans who continue to keep the fire alive for this show.

Beyond our discussion of one of the board games last Monday, we had a lot of fun celebrating all that we love about this franchise in this episode. There's a lot to love about this show and maybe part of that love has to do with the sheer potential the series had and that has left us to fill in the gaps in the most creative ways. This is not to say it wouldn't have been awesome had it been allowed to continue - but we simply don't know, and thus we're left with a promise of what might have been. And as the years continue to roll by, we get to build up its mythos more and more, further elevating it into this nearly perfect thing with a limited TV series, a movie, two tabletop RPGs, and a good number of board games and card games.

Vlog Ep. 282: Lucifer: From Comics to Small Screen

Tonight's #BaduyPride discussion was another requested topic, this time about the now rather expansive Lucifer franchise. And while the original request was to talk about the most recent season specifically (which we haven't seen), we instead broadened things to talk about the origins of this version of the character, covered some of his key comic book moments, and of course, got around to discussing the TV series.

You can tell we're pretty big fans of the former Vertigo comic line that helped to launch the stories of the Endless, John Constantine, and of course the Lucifer side of their story world. And while that was a bit of a barrier for us when we first tried to get into the TV show, over time we've come to better appreciate it as an independent creative work that doesn't really tie too strongly to its source material. And it's a show that has had enough of a following to manage to stick around for 6 seasons, so that's something.

Vlog Ep. 246: Star Trek Lower Decks

We focus more on different fandoms on Thursdays for #BaduyPride and today's episode is about Star Trek: Lower Decks, the adult animated series that we thought we'd hate but ended up falling in love with. And it's not because it's an irreverently funny show - it turned out to be a unique celebration of years of Star Trek fandom in a contemporary and hilarious package.

I do feel like the show has something for everyone, whether you're a diehard Trekkie or someone who has never seen a Star Trek show in their life. And I'm curious to see what sort of fans shows like this will inspire. Embracing diversity has always been a central part of the Star Trek mythos and a greater variety of fan voices will make things even better in the long term.

Vlog Ep. 234: Kilig Happy Moments

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about those kilig moments - the things that make your heart go flutter or makes the audience of a show go "aww...". We didn't quite know how to tackle such an expansive topic but we started by exploring different romance and romantic comic movies, which are often cited as the classic sources for kilig. The different lists we tried to explore certainly stressed how differently we can define what counts as a good romantic movie, but it was a fun experience all the same.

But beyond the movies and the romance, we also wanted to touch on the more platonic moments that still get the heart racing. And it was nice to have a lot of good friends on the show with us to help share in things and provide their own insights into what works for them. The months and months of quarantine have been very difficult for all of us and hopefully, tonight's episode acted as a good reminder of how we make one another feel because of how we matter to one another.

Vlog Ep. 233: Avatar: The Last Airbender

This episode of #BaduyPride is about the still powerful and beautiful series that is Avatar: The Last Airbender. I don't think any of us could have predicted at the time what an impact this animated Nickelodeon series would have on so many people. For those of us who have watched the series, I think it's fair to say that we've all been changed by its nuanced storytelling in one way or another.

This episode focused on the series that kicked everything off and is now forever remember for the 61 episodes that made up its 3 seasons. And there are all the different books, comics, video games, and even animated shorts that helped to further flesh out the world and give us more ways to celebrate the camaraderie and exploits of Team Avatar.

Vlog Ep. 231: The One About FRIENDS

Tonight's episode of #BaduyPride was all about that timelessly popular television sitcom - Friends. For one reason or another, this show about a group of 20-somethings navigating their lives in New York together continues to have near-universal appeal. And since I had finally gotten Tobie to watch all 10 seasons, we were finally in a place to talk about the show in earnest.

And what's more fun than talking about a great show than sharing the conversation with a good friend? We were lucky to get our friend Noel to join us as (1) we love him and (2) he's one of the biggest Friends fans that we know. And that's how this discussion went on for over 2 hours and it still felt like we could have gone on even longer.

Vlog Ep. 207: Cracking The Crystal Maze

Despite a number of technical difficulties, we managed to get through tonight's #BaduyPride episode about one of our favorite television shows - The Crystal Maze! And it was even more awesome when one of the guys behind The Crystal Maze Fan Group Blog joined the stream to help geek out with us about the program.

I knew we were going to have fun with this episode, but even I was surprised at how deeply we got into it given Tobie and I haven't really talked about the show all that much in recent years. It just goes to show what a near-universal impact the game show had on everyone who had a chance to catch it and maybe our dreams of some sort of local incarnation of the show may actually come to life.

On to YouTube to watch some classic episodes!

Vlog Ep. 163: Battlestar Galactica

Today's #BaduyPride was dedicated to our love for Battlestar Galactica - particularly the 2004 reimagined series developed for television by Ron Moore. What started as a 3-hour mini-series was followed by a 4-season show, numerous webisodes, at least two movies, and a prequel TV series as well.

Despite the show being over 15 years old at this point, we made sure to avoid major spoilers in our discussion for the franchise because it is THAT good and remains a shining example of what great science fiction dramatic television can look like. And the position that BSG maintains in my heart has only truly been challenged by the likes of The Expanse as of late - it's really such an amazing piece of fiction and one that Tobie and I will always love.

Vlog Ep. 143: Spoilery WandaVision Talk

We had a lot of fun with our first spoiler-filled #BaduyPride episode despite how we typically avoid spoiling both old and new movies and TV shows. But we figured that crazy brilliance of WandaVision more than justified us talking about our theories and speculations freely without the burden of avoiding spoilers.

We hope everyone enjoyed the live stream as much as we did, and if people want to see more episodes like this, do let us know! We will, of course, clearly label if the episode is going to contain spoilers to help people continue to enjoy content at their own pace while still leaving others free to geek out with us and just throw out any ideas that may make sense.

And YES - expect us to have another WandaVision episode once the first season fully wraps up, if only to see how many of our theories prove to be true come the end of the show.

Vlog Ep. 135: Storming Takeshi's Castle

We had so much fun with tonight's #BaduyPride episode about Takeshi's Castle, or however you may know this amazing, one-of-a-kind Japanese game show. As painful as the experience obviously was for many of the contestants on the show, it's still an amazing television experience that we'll never quite see again whether due to safety reasons or on the scale of the production that we saw with this show.

While I don't think Tobie and I would ever want to be on a show like Takeshi's Castle, we can't help but celebrate the creative ideas for games and challenges they came up with and how everyone on the show was just so gung-ho. I mean, why else would they compete in a show with such insane physical challenges AND do this in a themed costume, right?

Vlog Ep. 126: Such Fun with Miranda

Today's episode of #BaduyPride is about one of our favorite TV shows, the subtly brilliant comedy that is Miranda! This BBC show ran from 2009-2015 across a total of 3 series (seasons) and a two-part Christmas special that sort of tied things up for the show. As British shows do tend to run shorter than their US counterparts, you can totally binge the show in a single weekend and still have time to explore the different special bits she's also done that are littered all over YouTube.

We absolutely love this show and have repeatedly recommended it to friends for over 7 years now. Why this little show has such a big impact on us is hard to capture in words (as you can see in our struggled efforts to do so in the episode) but it's still a timeless delight. Miranda is always going to be a delight and I hope tonight's show helps more people get into this hilarious show. It truly is such fun

Vlog Ep. 122: Traveling Slower Than Light with The Expanse

Today's #BaduyPride episode was all about The Expanse, not just as an amazing science fiction TV show but as a still-expanding franchise of hard science awesomeness. I love the books and all the short fiction that has been crafted for the series and we've found the official board game to be a lot of fun as well. We've yet to actually play the official RPG based on the show, but we're very eager to try it this year, provided we assemble the right crew.

I REALLY love this series and I honestly hope this episode, as disorganized as it was at some points, helps people get into it as well, whether they decide to start with the books or the TV show or whatever. It's things like this that is what defines the Baduy Pride vlog experience for us - unabashedly celebrating things that we love. And probably sounding kinda crazy when we talk about them because we get too excited and the words come out in the wrong order. Maybe that was more me than Tobie in this episode, but you get the idea.

Vlog Ep. 119: RPDR Year 12

Today's #BaduyPride was a celebration of the reality competition show RuPaul's Drag Race and its rather colorful history over the 12-ish years of the franchise's life. We tried to cover everything from the show format, it's many spin-offs, and all the drama in-between. It certainly made for a fun Saturday night conversation with our Baduy Pride friends who also enjoy watching the show.

And while we don't exactly claim to be RPDR superfans or anything like that, we do genuinely enjoy the show and continue to follow the franchise across its many iterations. And we're the sort of guys who honestly liked Drag U and wished it got a longer run than it did. So yeah, we're quirky fans of the show in that regard.

Vlog Ep. 114: Finding Fandoms Together

Tonight's #BaduyPride was about the many different fandoms that Tobie and I share and some of the stories behind how we got into them. This episode focused on TV shows given that going through a show together is a pretty distinct couple's activity and a significant investment of time for both involved in order to to the end of the show.

At first, I was worried that this episode was going to be a weird run-through of shows we like that might sound more like a ramble for folks. But as we got through the list of shows and started bringing up specific memories of how we got started and why we fell in love with it - things really started to flow better and I found new insight into why this episode was a good one to tackle.

Vlog Ep. 105: LGBT Movies and Shows

Today's #BaduyPride episode was all about those LGBT movies and TV shows that have stuck with us the most over the years. Whether they're outright favorites or just have a special place in our hearts, we did our best to cite different titles of interest with an admittedly obvious slant towards older movies.

What a time to be alive though that it feels like there's new LGBT content out there every single day. And not just foreign stuff, but a lot of local productions as well. It wasn't always like this and I hope everyone appreciates how far we've come even though we still have a long way to go.
