Vlog Ep. 204: Quarantine Check-in - Week 64

Tonight's Sunday episode of #BaduyPride episode is another quarantine check-in episode because (1) we're still under community quarantine here in the Philippines and (2) at one point or another I'm sure we've all been feeling the walls closing in at times. We continue to do these check-in episodes as a way to just take a breather, reach out to viewers, and try to get through this madness together.

And like many other check-in episodes, a lot of the discussion was a loose recap of recent events in our lives, weird situations specific to the quarantine life we've all been trying to juggle, and random pop culture things because we're still two geeks with a web show. We'll continue to include these episodes in our line-up for as long as they feel necessary and provide value to viewers. We just gotta pull together to get to the end of this pandemic, dear friends. And we'll take it one step at a time.

While we chose today's topic, we're always open to suggestions! If you have ideas for future video discussions, feel free to fill out this Google Form and your idea may be featured as the focus for an episode!

Vlog Ep. 203: Historical Events We Wished to Have Witnessed

This episode of #BaduyPride was certainly an imaginative one that had us thinking about what sort of historical events we'd want to witness. But that got us into first figuring out the sort of time travel we'd be invoking here, followed by what constitutes a historical event, and then it just became another Tobie and Rocky sort of conversation that would probably go better over alcohol.

Our sort of list ended up including big events like the moon landing but also nuanced events like the creation of certain art forms or the development of certain inventions. History can mean so many different things to different people and that was nicely reflected by some of the time travel ideas that came up in the chart with the viewers. The personal history ideas were of course some of the most fun ones to come up and I think a lot of us have some great moments worth revisiting.

Vlog Ep. 202: Starting a New Hobby

Tangentially related to Geek Pride Day, today's #BaduyPride episode was all about starting new hobbies. A large part of being a geek is celebrating your hobbies and other activities and interests you may have, so we really went to town with this episode. But you have to admit, hobbies make for a pretty expansive topic and there was a lot of things to cover.

But I really enjoyed how this episode went. IT was definitely a good example of why we continue with Baduy Pride throughout all this. Even though we're literally just talking to a camera as comments stream by on a screen, it stills feels a lot like we're hanging out with friends like we used to be able to. And we'll get back to that eventually, I'm sure. But for now, we work with what we have.

Vlog Ep. 201: Chope! The Card Game

For tonight's #BaduyPride featured tabletop game, we're traveling to Singapore with Chope! The Card Game, a clever little game that celebrates Singapore Hawker Culture through platy. With fewer than 100 cards, the game surprisingly supports 2-6 players, which is impressive for a smaller game. This game is the creation of one Daryl Chow, who has a surprising number of games under his belt, at least based on his BoardGameGeek profile

I really like this game because of its simplicity and yet how much it achieves at the same time. Not only did this lead to a colorful, creative card game with some fun game mechanics, but it's educational. With a few cards and a helpful flyer, it nicely educates players to what hawker culture is and what these different (now adorable) dishes are. And it takes a certain type of game to balance those different aspects effectively.

Vlog Ep. 200: Teaching, Mentoring, and Apprenticing

Oh wow, we've actually gotten to 200 episodes of #BaduyPride! And I suppose our rather serious topic of teaching, mentoring, and apprenticing was a meaty enough subject to tackle for this episode. Coincidentally Tobie had just given a talk today related to his field and so we were really in that right mindset to talk about this sort of thing.

Special thanks again to Mitch for helping us put together an official intro video for the show! It just took us 200 episodes to get around to creating one, but it's better late than never! Baduy Pride continues to be not just something we enjoy doing, but a live stream experience that we enjoy sharing with friends and other viewers who are bound to become friends as well. Thanks for staying with us throughout the run of this show (and this pandemic).

Vlog Ep. 199: Exploring the Worlds of Studio Ghibli

This longer Friday night episode of #BaduyPride is all about the whimsical and wonderful fantasy worlds of Studio Ghibli as primarily envisioned by the now legendary Hayao Miyazaki. And while he is the driving force between many of those movies, he's not alone in creating their beautiful animations. The entire team there works together to tell very particular stories that we only really experience through their films and other animated releases.

We really took the time to discuss each of their feature films and how we felt about them, which all just speaks to how much we love their movies. They're all generally quite good, but naturally certain ones really stand out, depending on your interests and other inclinations.

Vlog Ep. 198: Sorta Podcast Recommendations

After some unusual technical difficulties that threatened to turn #BaduyPride into an actual podcast without video, we eventually got to push through with our best effort to provide recommendations for podcasts or similar audio content for people to listen to while doing other things. This was a viewer request that we struggled with for a while since we really don't listen to a lot of podcasts regularly, but we did our best to provide something.

It's interesting that podcasting really made reference to the method of transmission more than the content, hence now it feels like there's a podcast for every flavor of content under the sun. And maybe we'll have more time for this sort of content again when we actually leave the house more. I think a lot of relied on travel time as our primary audio content listening time and that has been denied to us for more than a year now while we remain under community quarantine.

Vlog Ep. 197: All About Sauces

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about sauces, condiments, dips, dressings, and other related liquid flavor enhancers. I think we went through a record number of definitions and delineations between terms just to get through the first 15 minutes of the episode, which in itself was a good sign that we were off to a crazy start.

I like these episodes because they end up being more relatable to a wider audience and thus we get more participation in the episode. As much as we try to be consistent in the level of energy (and craziness) across episodes regardless of the number of live viewers, it really does make a difference when we have more friends in the chat participating.

Vlog Ep. 196: A View of Tang Garden

This episode of #BaduyPride is all about the tile-laying board game Tang Garden. This creatively beautiful board game for 1-4 players was created by Francesco Testini and Pierluca Zizzi and published by ThunderGryph Games. This clever creation includes a lot of the sort of game mechanics that we like including set collection, tile placement, and variable player powers, if you want to get all formal about things.

We like the game because it's strategic and aesthetic at the same time. The resulting gardens are always interesting to look at and the little stories that form based on how you crafted things to benefit your nobles make for great game experiences. We really can't wait to share this game with friends in person - whenever that's going to be.

Vlog Ep. 195 - Hopeful Mentality - Things To Look Forward To

This Sunday episode of #BaduyPride was all about keeping a hopeful mentality and the sort of things that we all look forward to, even during quarantine. And given this time of so much stress and things to worry about, we all need to keep ourselves from falling into the trap of getting swallowed by all the gloom and doom on social media or in the news.

And it's always nice to celebrate the small wins or to count your blessings if you prefer that sort of statement. Keeping sight of the good things that are still happening to us during these difficult times is not necessarily toxic positivity, but more about being sensible and not overly focusing on the negative things out there. We hope that this episode helps to act as a reminder that there are still good things happening.

Vlog Ep. 194: Summer Drinks!

Today's suggested episode topic for #BaduyPride was all about summer drinks! And naturally, it was interesting to determine what our idea about such drinks was before we could really tackle things in earnest since there's no stopping people from drinking hot drinks on a hot day. But our working definition became that of drinks that we think of during the summer and figure they will help us beat the heat somehow - hot coffee isn't the first thing that comes to mind.

But given my keto limitations, we also had a probably longer-than-needed discussion about the importance of water and the unintentional "flavors" of local water. This all depends on how they are processed whether through filtration, purification, mineral treatments, distillation, and what have you. What is not always just water, especially around here.

And while we're not big beach people, I think anyone would miss the feeling of a nice cold drink at some beachside cafe. Maybe we'll work that into our travel schedule should things finally turn for the better in this country.

Vlog Ep. 193: Kimchi and Other Banchan

Because Tuesday are now Chews-Days, this episode of #BaduyPride was all about Korean Kimchi and other banchan - those delightful side dishes that are served alongside Korean barbecue and other dishes. They often feel like a meal in themselves, really, and I totally get the temptation to just indulge in that and not even bother with the barbecue.

This episode topic was suggested by Mitch, who also volunteered to join us as a co-host for today's episode. She helped us properly pronounce the different dishes, which was always a way for her to practice her Korean lessons. Plus we're always happy to have friends on the show, especially people as supportive as her.

Vlog Ep. 192: Working With The Builders

This episode of #BaduyPride had us focusing on two games in The Builders series created by Frédéric Henry. This 2-4 player game combines action points, card drafting, and set collection with a distinct love for historical architecture to create a unique game experience. It's not an overly complicated game nor is it quite as easy as some good gateway games out there.

Our board game collection isn't all just about overly heavy games like Caverna and Through the Ages. Games like The Builders occupy a unique niche in our collectiton to ensure that we have different types of games to appeal to the interests and gaming skill levels of different players. If only we'd be able to play with friends again as easily as we used to. Perhaps one day soon.

Vlog Ep. 191: Quarantine Check-in - Week 61

This episode of #BaduyPride was scheduled to be another Quarantine Check-in episode, where we just sit back, relax, and discuss how things have been going throughout this stressful pandemic period. Admittedly we can't help but rant a bit, but beyond that, we try to focus more on what works and the things we're thankful for. There are still good things out there despite the bad stuff.

Our approach to things throughout quarantine has remained largely the same. We minimize our excursions outside. We do our best to stay safe through the regular use of face masks and lots of hand-washing and disinfecting. We support one another and do our best to help each other cope with this quarantine time. And we try to create a safe space for friends who also need an avenue for venting stress or just feeling somewhat more connected to other people.

Vlog Ep. 190: Your Personal Legacy

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about one's personal legacy, a question that has been weighing heavily on our minds given a number of friends who have passed well before their time. We've all experienced more loss than usual as of late, and we probably need to steel ourselves for possibly more.

Legacy has a lot of possible meanings and we did our best to talk about its many facets in this episode. We started with the physical stuff but went on at length to talk about the impact we have on other people whether we like it or not. It was a rather lofty discussion with its heavy moments, but it still felt important for us to talk about it, especially given recent personal events.

Vlog Ep. 189: The Maxis Sim Games

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about the different Sim games originally created by Maxis, which is now a part of Electronic Arts. This one company has made quite an impact on the gaming world and pretty much popularized the simulation game genre with their unique approach to things.

It was nice to go through the gaming history of this company, particularly given how many of those games I had played growing up. I was sure that even Tobie must have played games like SimAnt, but I guess that really was more of a niche experience. But a least well all enjoyed unique explorations like Spore and maybe we'll try diving back into The Sims sometime.

Vlog Ep. 188: Coffee, Kopi, Kape, et al

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about coffee in all of its glorious forms! And I guess we're starting to codify Tuesdays as "chews-days" where we celebrate different food topics, and this one had us talking about the blessed java creation. We tried a little history both academic and personal and then it was sort of anything goes from that point.

Today's episode felt a lot closer to our "normal", which was nice. And I know a large part of that involves all our friends and other viewers who participated in the conversation and really gave us a lot to think about and explore. We spent more time searching for things online than expected for this coffee episode, but no regrets for the resulting conversation.

Vlog Ep. 187: Dracula's Feast

After a short break, we decided to resume our #BaduyPride episodes this week and kicked off Monday with a game very dear to our hearts, especially now. Dracula's Feast is a (possibly) lesser-known social deduction party game created by Peter C. Hayward. It's the sort of party game that needs a minimum of four players but can safely support up to 8 players as needed.

It was a little bittersweet to cover this game today given the person who brought the game to our attention is no longer with us. But the best thing we could do is to celebrate a great game and sharing the joy with everyone in the hopes that more people decide to get a copy for themselves. What else are geeks to do, right?
