Vlog Ep. 47: Our Personal History with Handheld Gaming Consoles

In another rare video game-related episode of #BaduyPride, tonight we ended up talking our personal history with handheld gaming consoles going back to various Game and Watch type games and Brick Games all the way to the PSP and the quirks of why we don't own a Nintendo Switch.

The biggest challenge of this topic, at least for us, is how we've largely moved away from consoles and have focused a lot more efforts on board games. And when it comes to casual gaming on the go, it's hard to deny the power of the smartphone as a gaming device, so that's really something to consider.

Vlog Ep. 46: Empire Building with Concordia

Tonight's #BaduyPride featured one of our favorite board games, this being the economic strategy game that is Concordia. The first real challenge was figuring out how to keep the game in frame, but beyond that, it was a rather free-flowing discussion of what makes the game so special.

Given we have a good 600 games in our collection, I guess it'll be a long time before we run out of board games top talk about. But we're definitely focusing on the ones we enjoy the most, and Concordia is definitely a unique favorite that always gives back. And we hope that these episodes help more people find new games they might enjoy. Just tell us why it's Concordia haha

Vlog Ep. 45: What We've Been Reading This September

A friend suggested another round-up style episode that we can probably do every month. We had already talked about the games we've been playing and the shows we've been watching - so this time around we're talking about the different things we've been reading! And this list includes a wide variety of materials including books, comic books, and RPG reference titles.

On a personal note, I'm happy that I'm finally back on track to achieve my end-of-year reading goal, so I hope I keep up the pace. It was kind of surprising to listen to Tobie talk about all the things he's been reading because his tastes can be a little more extreme, to say the least.

Vlog Ep. 44: The Magic of the Changeling RPG

We started tonight's #BaduyPride live stream vlog started later than normal, ironically because of another RPG session we were playing that ran long. But we still had a lot of fun talking about the different worlds of the Changeling RPGs as originally published by White Wolf. And that meant tackling the two main systems of Changeling the Dreaming and Changeling the Lost and somehow cover all the great stuff about each game world within a roughly 30-minute episode.

Today really stressed that our RPG adventures across both iterations of Changeling ended up influencing how I approach other RPG characters in other games and even the types of fiction I enjoyed reading. I don't think I wouldn't have appreciated The Dresden Files as much as I have had it not been for the influence of our Changeling games. And so as rushed as this episode was, it was still a lot of fun and certainly reflects a game system that has a lot of meaning to us.

Vlog Ep. 43: Our Favorite O Bar Performances

We knew this was going to be a fun episode to tackle but I don't think we were prepared to end up hosting a 3+ hour silent watch party of sorts in celebration of some of our favorite O Bar performances. Even if we couldn't play the videos in their entirety due to potential copyright concerns, we still had a lot of fun with the folks who stayed with the stream.

Starting to get into the groove of these longer Friday night episodes as a weird replacement for a fun night out. I don't think we'll regularly go beyond an hour - this particular episode was unique since (1) going through my O Bar videos is a rabbit hole experience and (2) we were drinking. But I do enjoy pushing the episodes to run a little longer as a change of pace.

Vlog Ep. 42: On the Trail of MIND MGMT

In our first comic book focused episode, tonight's #BaduyPride was all about the world of psychic espionage of MIND MGMT, as created by Matt Kindt. This is a rare comic that Tobie first discovered and later introduced me to because that's how we work. And I have no regrets at all for finally enjoying this series earlier this year

This was another situation where we sort of struggled to explain in detail why we love this comic book series so much mainly because we also didn't want to spoil the story for people who have yet to read this amazing work. And admittedly for complex narratives like this one, the devil is truly in the details. The best thing about the story is all the nuances of how things were crafted but we avoid talking about such things so that if someone watching this video does discover MIND MGMT because of us, then we'd find comfort in not having spoiled it for them.

Tricky, yeah?

Vlog Ep. 41: Science Fiction Tropes

We took the suggestion to talk about our favorite science fiction tropes and ended up discussing this article of top 25 science fiction tropes and dissected each one in terms of whether we liked it or not and if we agreed with the ranking. It was certainly a different format for a video but we enjoyed the discussion.

But man, the top one for the writer was really sentient starships? Well, everyone has different interests, I suppose. And this was a pre-COVID article, after all, so now I'm sure dystopias and medical horror may be more prominent as science fiction themes or tropes at this point.

Vlog Ep. 40: Dungeon Crawling with Diablo

This marks our very first video game episode for #BaduyPride and I'm glad we got to celebrate our shared love for the Diablo game franchise. Tobie and I encountered Diablo separately in our respective geeky lives but in the end, we both fell in love with the fulfillment cycle that comes with mouse-driven hacking and slashing through hordes and hordes of unholy monsters.

Recording this episode naturally makes me want to play Diablo again - but actually, it might be fun to revive Diablo II instead of just going back to the latest Diablo III season. Anyone fancy a game? Maybe Tobie and I can join you for a few runs or something.

Vlog Ep. 39: Carcassonne Game Discussion

Tonight's #BaduyPride live stream vlog discussion was about one of our favorite tabletop games - Carcassonne! The game is easy enough to teach but certainly tricky to master, especially with the different rule systems introduced into the game by each of the different expansions released over the years. And it's this balance of deceptive simplicity and complexity that gives us so much joy.

Our collection features a good number of the expansions, but we are continually on the lookout for the gaps in our Carcassonne collection. We may never have a large enough table to play all these expansions at the same time, but we'll always make the most of what we have and enjoy every time the tiles start coming out of the bag.

Vlog Ep. 38: Through the Ages Board Game Discussion

Because we've been enjoying these different board game deep dive episodes, tonight's #BaduyPride live stream vlog was all about the complex strategy game Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization created by Vlaada Chvátil and published by Czech Games Edition. This remains to be one of our favorite translations of the Civilization-style 4X game into a tabletop experience, which is quite a big challenge. And we spend the episode talking about the many ways they did this in such an unusual and ultimately brilliant way.

This episode was prompted by the arrival of our copy of the expansion New Leaders and Wonders this week after it took a lengthy trip from the US to get here. Leaders and Wonders are certainly cards that have a lot of impact on the game and how players end up developing their civilizations to make the most of the special abilities and I'm excited to what they've added to mix things up.

Vlog Ep. 37: Dune by Gale Force Nine

For our Saturday night #BaduyPride live stream vlog, we talked about Gale Force Nine's beautiful update of the 1979 Dune board game. This monster of a game features some very crazy faction-specific powers that players can leverage to try to take control of Arrakis and its highly precious spice. With the new Dune movie just around the corner, we figured it was as good a time as any to talk about this game and why we appreciate all the love that went into reviving it after so many years.

We also decided to run this episode after Dire Wolf Digital announced their new Dune Imperium board game featuring art inspired by the new movie. This is one of the best things about a new movie regardless of how good or bad it ends up being - it inspires all sorts of supplementary creations in different media to ride the wave of publicity that comes with big movies like this. So we can't really complain - a new movie means we get new games, new books, and who knows what else will come out in the months to come?

Vlog Ep. 36: Beginner's Guide to LGBT Bars

One of our longest episodes yet! It took us a good hour to get through our discussion of our Beginner's Guide to LGBT Bars given we had so many aspects to cover from personal safety, smart practices, and responsible cruising. And of course all the time we kept dredging up good memories of fun bar nights and our share of misadventures during crazier times past.

This was definitely a really fun topic for a Friday night even while in lockdown. I was worried that this might not be the most appropriate discussion for a time like this when the bars aren't even open, but it did end up being a very fun discussion and perhaps the sort of levity that we all needed to not think about being confined to our homes for 6 months running.

Vlog Ep. 35: Our Favorite Tabletop Game Mechanics

Today's #BaduyPride live stream vlog episode was about game mechanics we enjoy in different board games and other tabletop gaming experiences. Rather than just talk about one game today, this was a more free-flowing discussion that touched on many different titles we love and are happy to have in our rather large game collection.

Have you ever thought about what game mechanics you like? Have you ever purchased a game specifically because of a familiar playstyle at its core? Then this episode might help verbalize some of the reasons you like some games more than others.

Vlog Ep. 34: The Dresden Files Cooperative Board Game

In time for me finishing Book 16: Peace Talks and still waiting for Book 17: Battle Ground, today's #BaduyPride episode is about The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game designed by Eric. B. Vogel and published by Evil Hat Productions. This 1-5 game isn't the easiest one to win, but it certainly provides a highly thematic experience that's true to the books.

As far as games adapted from franchises go, this is definitely one of my favorites plus it features an entirely original game system. Typically we see different brands just buy into existing game franchises and develop a reskin of an existing game, which isn't inherently bad. But coming up with a wholly original game system for a beloved book series is pretty amazing.

Vlog Ep. 33: Gameboys Season 1

So we finally did a #BaduyPride live stream vlog episode about the amazing Pinoy BL series Gameboys and 30 minutes was barely enough to talk about all the things we like about the show and what we loved about this first season. But seriously, this is more than just another BL series - it's a well-written Filipino LGBT story told with the aid of some amazing actors and a very creative production team.

It still blows my mind how they managed to film this show despite the constraints of lockdown and ended up with a piece of entertainment that is worlds better than some of the things we've seen come out of bigger studios and networks. It's a show that fully embraced this pandemic and found a way to incorporate it into their story in such a powerful and meaningful way while still delivering a fascinating character-driven love story at the same time. Thank you The IdeaFirst Company for such a brilliant show. We can't wait for Pearl Next Door and even more Gameboys!

Vlog Ep 32: Ryuutama - Natural Fantasy RPG

Just after finishing our actual session zero for a new campaign using this game system, we really enjoyed recording tonight's #BaduyPride live stream vlog episode about Ryuutama: Natural Fantasy RPG. There's a lot to love about this clever Japanese game that tries to celebrate the joys of "Honobono" feels in a tabletop experience.

This was the most in-depth we've gone with any tabletop RPG system thus far, and it was an interesting experience. 30 minutes isn't a heck of a lot of time to talk about a whole game and really go deep into things, but I think we did a decent effort of highlighting the key parts of this game and what we love about it. We'll figure out the format more as time progresses, I suppose, but this felt like a really good start.

Vlog Ep. 31: Wuxia and Wire Fu

Because of a "recent movie" that we watched, we decided to do a #BaduyPride live stream vlog episode about our love for Wuxia and Wire Fu as a genre across different media including movies, TV shows, computer games, and of course tabletop RPGs. While we're only fans of the genre and far from experts in it, we hope that everyone was able to share our love for these stories and the high-flying action that tends to come with them.

Recording this episode had us missing the likes of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Hero and we ended up scouring YouTube for clips of some of our favorite action scenes. It's more than just filming high stakes action but actually choreographing not just the fight but also what story the fight tells about the characters.

Vlog Ep. 30: About Relationship Goals

We brought out the long-sleeved shirts for today's #BaduyPride live stream vlog as (1) they're the last of our matching shirts and (2) tonight's topic was pretty important. Today we tackled the rather large topic of relationship goals, which is something people have either told us or left as a comment on some of our couple selfies.

Our approach to this ended up being outlining the sort of general categories or buckets of goals one might have within a relationship and how to make that work. Thus we ended up talking about goals related to communication, finances, geekiness, and plain old "traditional" goals. Not sure if we addressed the original spirit of the topic, but whatever we ended up with more than filled up the 30 minutes.

Vlog Ep. 29: Tabletop Escape Room Experiences

We did another tabletop gaming-related #BaduyPride live stream vlog episode today where we talked about different tabletop escape room experiences! A friend had suggested we talk about the Exit the Room and Unlock games and this developed into a larger discussion of the joy of these one-shot gaming experiences that are a pretty great deal when you're still practicing social distancing.

But talk about escape room games led us needing to talk about other one-time game experiences like mystery/deduction games, which are also a related but still different kind of fun. And our love for all of these games resulted in a longer episode than planned, but I hope the discussion was still of value to people looking for other ways of killing time with whoever they share a living space with.

Vlog Ep. 28: Dune (2020) Trailer Reaction

So Tobie and I stayed up late to catch the world debut of the first full trailer for the new Dune movie by Denis Villeneuve after mistakenly hoping it would go live at 9AM Eastern Time instead of 9AM Pacific Time. It was our first time to do two shows in one night and our first attempt at a reaction video.

I am a very passionate fan of Frank Herbert's Dune books and I know I probably sound overly critical and nitpicky in this video, but hey it's a live reaction so I get to rant a bit. But know that my criticism stems from a position of love for this story and the hope that the movie helps to introduce the franchise to new fans and get more people to explore this fascinating world that Herbert created. I'm not sure if the trailer does a great job of selling the idea of Dune to non-fans, so ultimately this is more trailer criticism than movie criticism. In the end, I'm still going to watch the movie when it comes out and I'm going to hope for the best.

Vlog Ep. 27: Unboxing Terraforming Mars: Turmoil (KS Edition)

So we were a few hours too early to do a live reaction video to the new Dune (2020) movie trailer, so we had to pivot and do something else instead. We ended up doing our first live unboxing video despite not having the right setup for it. What a time to be alive!

The game in focus today is the Kickstarter Edition of the Turmoil expansion for Terraforming Mars. Because I had it shipped to my sister in Singapore, it took a bit more time before the game made it over here. Hence we have an unboxing video that is at least half a year too late, but who's counting, right?

Vlog Ep. 26: Star Trek Day 2020

Happy Star Trek Day, everyone! We got into the spirit of today being the anniversary of when the first episode of Star Trek originally aired and had a whole #BaduyPride episode dedicated to the franchise. We went a little over our usual 30 minutes as covering all the different TV shows and movies alone barely fit into the episode.

Was happy to be joined by fellow Trekkies and Trekkers during tonight's live stream as that certainly helped the discussion get even more lively. I'm a huge Star Trek fan and I'm glad that Tobie celebrates my passion as well, and that made a great episode for today.

Vlog Ep. 25: Borough Building with Suburbia

We've gotten into the habit of talking about different board games every Monday and today's #BaduyPride live stream vlog focused on our favorite city-building game, Suburbia! We've racked up dozens of play sessions of this game over the years and we were more than happy to talk about it for today's 30 minutes.

Beyond discussing the basic principles of the game and the different expansions that have come out, we also shared a lot of little stories of our different games. I really enjoyed thinking of our favorite tiles that have come up time and time again in different games and even some of the quirks of players when it comes to playing the game.

Vlog Ep. 24: Tabletop Games We're Playing This September

In another possibly regular episode theme, the 24th episode of the #BaduyPride live stream vlog was about the different tabletop games we've been playing lately. A large part of the episode was invested in talking about our active RPG campaigns and explaining those different systems for newer players but we also got to wrap up with a few of the board games we've been playing or just acquired.

It's a little weird to be talking about tabletop games while we're still under lockdown in Metro Manila, but the hobby is still something to celebrate. And maybe talking about these games now will just give us more to look forward to when we can finally play new games with friends in person again.

Vlog Ep. 23: What We're Watching This September

For this #BaduyPride episode, Tobie and I had a more freewheeling discussion about what we've been watching on "TV" as of late, although most of our entertainment has come from different streaming services more than anything else. We tend to juggle a lot of shows at any one time, so there was a lot of ground to cover.

We might make this a more regular "content bucket" for the show since we can always revisit what we're actively engaged with and the resulting conversation was a great way to connect more with viewers and just talk TV. And quite frankly, we could all use more venues for social interaction, even if just online.

Vlog Ep 22: Top 5 Comic Book Movies

For our 22nd episode of the #BaduyPride live stream vlog, we went to the movies! Or at least we talked about movies given the request for us to cover our Top 5 Comic Book Movies. It's hard for two people to come up with a single list of only 5 items, but I think we came up with a decent list.

It was rather interesting that Tobie and I are of such geeky resonance that we were able to easily agree to the first three items on the list and just had to negotiate around the last two. I think we nicely presented different interests while spending almost half the video praising Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hahaha

Vlog Ep. 21: The Future of Retro Gaming

We got our first video game question thanks to the community pool and we had a lot of fun with it. Tonight's #BaduyPride live stream vlog was about "The Future of Retrogaming", which was quite a mouthful in itself. So we needed to go through a couple of definitions in order to set the stage for the main conversation and where we wanted to go.

Beyond the widely-accepted definition of retro games, we expanded the discussion to include other things that are keeping the retro games movement alive including games that celebrate retro aesthetics or concepts, franchises that never die, and even a few tabletop games that also celebrate older game systems.

Vlog Ep. 20: Traitor Games

The randomizer gave us another tabletop gaming tonight for tonight's #BaduyPride live stream vlog as we ended up talking about games with a traitor mechanic! But instead of just talking about this genre of games in general, we focused on the traitor games that we've come to enjoy more than others and happen to own copies of.

Admittedly, this got us to the brink of talking about some of the quirkier hidden role games like Spyfall and A Fake Artist Goes to New York, but we figured we'd save that for a future episode. Covering 5 different games with different spins on how to involve traitor players more than filled up our 30 minutes of time for today's episode.
