Vlog Ep. 133: Unboxing and Re-Boxing the Imperial Settlers Storage Box

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was an unusual first - we had a brief unboxing of the new Imperial Settlers Storage Box, and then we left the stream on as we slotted the different cards into their new home. As geeks who at least own all retail expansions of the game, that was a fair bit of organizing. But yeah, it wasn't our most conversant video.

But it felt like a fun thing to do as a mid-week video on a day when we typically don't have live stream episodes because of RPG scheduling conflicts. We had fun doing it and we appreciate the few friends who stayed with us as we worked on the box.

Vlog Ep. 132: The One About Chicken

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was just about chicken. I'm not even kidding - we spent over an hour talking about our favorite chicken dishes to eat, the chicken dishes that we can actually prepare, and even trying to remember our first memories of eating chicken. This was truly a very chicken-full episode.

I love crazy topics like this that seem deceptively simple at first. But over the course of the discussion, especially given the contributions of the live viewers based on the comments, and things just get crazy. And that's the Baduy Pride vlog experience in a nutshell. The topic is really just a starting point for the fun. We go where people take us and see how things develop from there.

Vlog Ep. 131: Counting the Days with Tzolk'in

Tonight's #BaduyPride was all about Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar, an intimidating worker placement game created by Simone Luciani and Daniele Tascini. The central feature of the game is a giant wheel that connects with 5 smaller wheels across the board that is more than just a gimmick. In fact, it's a central part of the overall gameplay and really does stress the impact of time passing.

While not the easiest game, it is definitely fun with that results in some very fulfilling gameplay experiences and we've yet to regret bringing the game out. Once you manage to wrap your head around the game's unique core mechanic of only placing or removing workers during a turn versus the movement of the wheels, then things start to fall into place after that.

Vlog Ep. 130: Applying for a Job

I didn't realize this #BaduyPride episode on getting a job would be so relevant for so many people, but I suppose it is that time of the year when a lot of people are considering expanding their career horizons. We certainly don't claim to be experts, but we've certainly had enough experience upon which we've based our insights and tips that were shared in this video.

And I will repeat the reminder that the opinions we expressed in this episode do not reflect or represent the official positions of our respective companies of employment (past and present).

Otherwise, I know we had a lot to say, and we hope that what advice we could provide does prove useful to folks who encounter the video. I didn't expect it to run as long as it did and I assume that it might get more views over time as more people share the video around.

Vlog 129: The One About Sandwiches

This episode of #BaduyPride was all about...sandwiches. Like the food. Really. But in our typical geeky way, we dove deep into the subject of what makes a sandwich a sandwich before we could take things a bit more casually. But really, try looking up the definition of a sandwich and prepare to go down the rabbit hole of curious considerations and possibilities.

You can blame Tobie. His brain twists and turns in very unusual ways.

Beyond the existential questions related to when are sandwiches not sandwiches and all that, we spent a better part of the episode just talking about different types of sandwiches that we were honestly fond of across our personal histories. Episodes like this just illustrate how our conversations between us can go in totally strange directions without warning. And they make just make for good content for a vlog.

Vlog Ep. 128: Navigating the Five Tribes

For our regular Monday Tabletop Games feature, today's #BaduyPride episode is about Bruno Cathala's Five Tribes. The primarily 2-4 player game provides numerous ways to score points and thus a variety of ways to achieve victory. And this diversity of strategic options combined with a fairly easy-to-understand game mechanic makes it possible for players of different levels of experience to still have fun,

The game particularly shines with the quality of production that we've come to expect from Days of Wonder, along with Cathala's flair for interesting game mechanics. When you look at the many different games he's made it's rather fascinating how different they are from one another, and Five Tribes really does stand out thanks to its uniquely fun gameplay.

Vlog Ep. 127: First Dates

Wow, I can't believe that this episode of #BaduyPride (1) ran for over 2 hours and (2) still didn't quite decide on a firm definition of what constitutes dating. But that's the geekier side of this relationship where we can really go deep into trying to get a definition right given all the many different factors that get involved and make things just a wee bit complicated.

But we set out to talk about first dates because we hoped it would generate a great conversation with our viewers, and you guys totally didn't disappoint! We loved the spirited conversation that we ended up with and super enjoyed all the different stories, jokes, and asides that everyone had to share. Episodes like this, where everyone is able to join in the fun, is what makes Baduy Pride such a fun thing to stream almost every night.

Vlog Ep. 126: Such Fun with Miranda

Today's episode of #BaduyPride is about one of our favorite TV shows, the subtly brilliant comedy that is Miranda! This BBC show ran from 2009-2015 across a total of 3 series (seasons) and a two-part Christmas special that sort of tied things up for the show. As British shows do tend to run shorter than their US counterparts, you can totally binge the show in a single weekend and still have time to explore the different special bits she's also done that are littered all over YouTube.

We absolutely love this show and have repeatedly recommended it to friends for over 7 years now. Why this little show has such a big impact on us is hard to capture in words (as you can see in our struggled efforts to do so in the episode) but it's still a timeless delight. Miranda is always going to be a delight and I hope tonight's show helps more people get into this hilarious show. It truly is such fun

Vlog Ep. 125: Leveling Up with Super Mario

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was all about the Super Mario franchise. While our exposure to Nintendo consoles has been rather limited in recent years, we can't deny the power and influence of Mario as a franchise, a brand, or even as the Nintendo mascot. He really does live up to the "Super" part of his name.

Mario and his extended family and many enemies aren't going to go anywhere anytime soon. He's too much a part of our shared cultural experience. I think he's reached a point where he's bound to outlive Nintendo itself were things to come to that. If we can still love the guy despite not actually playing the games in recent years, it still says something about him and his impact on the world.

Vlog Ep. 124: Building the Castles of Mad King Ludwig

Today's #BaduyPride episode was about another clever Ted Alspach game. This tile-laying game is called Castles of Mad King Ludwig and it feels similar to Suburbia, but it's also amazingly different. Instead of building a beautifully organized city consisting of hexagonal tiles, we now have a haphazard castle of differently shaped rooms whose only constraint is the table everyone is playing on.

We decided to cover this game early in anticipation of the upcoming Kickstarter for a collector's edition of the game. We already like this core game experience and the Collector's Edition promises to be pretty great celebration of this game along with 2 new expansions and a lot of special bells and whistles that is par for the course for special editions like this.

Vlog Ep. 123: Building Memories with Lego

Today's #BaduyPride episode was all about Lego and our love for these building sets over the years. Like many, both Tobie and I had big memories that involved only a limited number of sets and in the episode, we recounted very different play styles when it came to these colorful plastic bricks. But there's always going to be that appreciation for the resulting creations that people are able to make whether by following the instructions or just turning their imagination into reality.

Today's episode has reminded me of the need to at least play through our different Lego console games, including addressing the many Lego Dimensions sets I've never even opened and thus have obviously not played with either. But we'll see how things go. I know I don't have the space nor the financing to really invest in Lego again, but I can at least enjoy its expanded media here and there.

Vlog Ep. 122: Traveling Slower Than Light with The Expanse

Today's #BaduyPride episode was all about The Expanse, not just as an amazing science fiction TV show but as a still-expanding franchise of hard science awesomeness. I love the books and all the short fiction that has been crafted for the series and we've found the official board game to be a lot of fun as well. We've yet to actually play the official RPG based on the show, but we're very eager to try it this year, provided we assemble the right crew.

I REALLY love this series and I honestly hope this episode, as disorganized as it was at some points, helps people get into it as well, whether they decide to start with the books or the TV show or whatever. It's things like this that is what defines the Baduy Pride vlog experience for us - unabashedly celebrating things that we love. And probably sounding kinda crazy when we talk about them because we get too excited and the words come out in the wrong order. Maybe that was more me than Tobie in this episode, but you get the idea.

Vlog Ep. 121: The One About Pets

This episode about #BaduyPride was all about pets. We're big animal people, even though we're not allowed to have pets in our current condo. But we still had more than enough experience to be able to talk about our experience with different types of animals and our tips and trips for being good pet owners.

Talking about animal care did have us thinking about Yoshi a lot. It has been a few years since he passed and we still haven't quite felt ready to go back to having a dog or any kind of pet just yet. Admittedly moving to this particular BGC condo was partly to force us to take time to consider things carefully since wanting to get a dog again would mean needing to move to a new place that would allow it. We'll get there.

Vlog Ep. 120: Counting Down with Hanabi

We were back to talking about tabletop games for this Monday episode of #BaduyPride, and in light of the new year, we focused on the fireworks celebration that is Hanabi! this 2-5 player game created by Antoine Bauza is a unique cooperative game where your ability to provide information to your team is severely limited.

Like we said in the video, the game is fairly easy to teach but of course, is difficult to master. But it's very clever and a lot of fun for players of all ages and thus why the deluxe edition is part of our game collection. You don't need the full deluxe (or deluxe II) experience to enjoy the game, but the mahjong tiles are a nice touch.

Vlog Ep. 119: RPDR Year 12

Today's #BaduyPride was a celebration of the reality competition show RuPaul's Drag Race and its rather colorful history over the 12-ish years of the franchise's life. We tried to cover everything from the show format, it's many spin-offs, and all the drama in-between. It certainly made for a fun Saturday night conversation with our Baduy Pride friends who also enjoy watching the show.

And while we don't exactly claim to be RPDR superfans or anything like that, we do genuinely enjoy the show and continue to follow the franchise across its many iterations. And we're the sort of guys who honestly liked Drag U and wished it got a longer run than it did. So yeah, we're quirky fans of the show in that regard.

Vlog Ep. 118: Happy New Year 2021!

Tonight's #BaduyPride episode was our New Year's episode to mark the start of 2021. We wanted to spend some time talking about what we expect (or more likely hope for) this year and even some of our aspirations, goals, or resolutions for the year.

We recognize that it's rather difficult to establish actual goals for the year given everything that's still going on. So much of life feels uncertain for as long as the pandemic is ongoing and our country has yet to established and sort of national vaccination effort. Someone on the stream mentioned noticing that there seem to be fewer New Year's Resolution-themed posts this year, and I feel that's the big driver behind that.

2021 will ultimately be what we make of it. So we hope for the best and stay as safe as we can, especially given the ongoing pandemic. Things should generally work out in the end.
